Well, regarding the photo of the tree and presents, one key was the 24-105L which allowed me to hand hold at these settings: iso 400, 1/6, f/4, IS on. You can also use a tripod with a lens that doesn't have IS to get a fairly blur free image. Once you get the photo, the key is all in attaining a pleasing color temperature and white balance (etc.) in post processing...using RAW makes this easier for me...I learned how to do this (and am still learning) by trial and error with low light shooting.
