Yep, Amikah's a silver.
Blue Weimars are gorgeous too.

Paula, we had Cara's hips fixed when she was just under a year old. I honestly believe that her quality of life would have been better had we NOT done the surgery. When they 'fixed' the second one, they clipped a nerve that rendered that leg almost useless for a couple months, and she was never able to walk right on it again.

The surgery made her back end taller than her front, which caused her immense problems with her front legs. Her feet and elbows started to feel the strain.

It was a bad decision on our part, and we would never do that particular surgery again. I believe she would have lived longer with dysplasia than she did with the surgery.

There ya go Lisa.

I have Cara's xrays from before and after. I should find a way to scan them.

I have to say I'm with Cat on the surgery. My Jake has it bad in one hip and really bad in the other. I will not subject him to the surgery and all that is associated. He will be with us until they bother him. He is 10 years old and he is a little slow to get up but does not seem to be in pain.

This is the one that Cara had:

pelvic rotation (also known as triple pelvic osteotomy, or pubic symphodesis) in which the hip socket is realigned, may be appropriate if done early enough. These treatments can be very effective, but as a rule tend to become less effective for heavier animals - their ability to treat the problem becomes reduced if the joint has to handle more pressure in daily life.

They broke her hip socket, reshaped it, and then pinned it back together.

oh wow...interesting. Thanks for the link. I see that it doesn't really show up until they are older puppies (like I couldn't tell if Kona had it w/o x-rays until then)...wow. Poor littles.

And poor Cara. I understand about doing the surgery though...I would have thought tthat would have been the correct thing to do.

Hug a ref today.

How about I'll do that tomorrow as long as Penn State wins? If they DON'T win....this whole entire state is going to be one big cranky. I could personally care less who wins, but don't want to deal with the crankiness.

Eric, at the time, we were led to believe that without the surgery she would only be able to walk for a max of three years.
We decided that the $$ for surgery was worth having her here with us for longer.
I wasn't aware of the fact that the surgery was risky or that it might make her worse.

This was in our days before computers, and I wasn't very good at research. I went solely on the vet's knowledge.

Well, fortunately I'm not the one that has to make the decision on if he should have surgery or not. While I love all dogs, these dogs are my hubbys thing. He is training them to be hunting dogs. He will also stud out Arthos and Duncan when they are old enough. I don't quite agree with how hubby deals with dogs sometimes. I'm a softy and tend to really spoil them. Hubby has a pretty firm hand with them. So, I stay out of his dealings with his dogs and he doesn't deal with the discipline etc... of my dogs.:)

WOOO there Cowgirl. I'm not faulting you for your decision. You offered up your knowledge based upon you experiences. There is nothign wrong with that. Beside I would never give you a hard time for how you did things before you knew me.

I think Buddy has a pretty bad case. He is going to need total hip replacement, from what hubby tells me. You can already see signs of him having troubles and he is only a year old. Supposedly in a couple years, he will either have to have the surgery, be put down, or we will have a dog that can't walk. I dunno, like I said, I'm glad it's not up to me to decide.

This reminded me. We went to NYC in 2003 and they still were at a very heightened level of security and there were cops everywhere you went. Most of them are the definition of old beat cops because they mostly walk rather than be in cars like out west.

We were walking from our hotel to grand central station every day and we kept seeing the same cop leaned up against a building while sound asleep. I think we saw him 2 or 3 times and his eyes were closed for loooooong periods of time.
