did you install the battery in it?

I don't know about Pro 1, but on G6 the remote sensor is facing the same direction as the lens, so it won't see the remote from the back...

- just trying the obvious first ...

In my world - G6 rules and the film days are over...

I discovered this by accident. I had my G6 hooked up to the TV and was going to take some pictures with the remote. When the remote buttons are pressed, you can actually see the flashes from the remote on the TV screen. Seems this is a good way to see if the remote is actually working. Also, you have to press a button on the camera to enable it to work with the remote.

that is an effect you can see with every digital camera.
The ccd/cmos is a lot more sensitive to IR than the human eye or film or else.
That is an effect a lot of digital-camera owners use for make interesting pictures. Use an IR-Filter on your cam that blocks the visible light, longer exposure and you get great colors...
try searching the forum for 'IR photography' or on google.

If its like the G5, you have to put the camera into timer mode. Extremely unintuitive, since there's no icon in the label indicating this.

On the G3, there icon on the button is combined with a timer and some sort of pic that could be identified as a remote-control (with a lot of imagination)

I stand corrected. :) It is actually printed on the G5 body as well. Where I was thinking of that its missing is the icon that shows on the main LCD. It does show on the little LCD on the top - but I hardly ever look at the top of my camera.
