It shares many traits with the CMOS sensor found in the flagship EOS-1Ds Mark III, including its 36mm x 24mm (35mm format) size, approximately 21.1 effective megapixels with 6.4μm pixel pitch, a 4-channel data readout, and low-pass filter design. However, this second-generation sensor offers increased sensitivity and improved noise reduction circuitry that enables standard ISO’s ranging from 100 to 6400 and expanded ISO ranges from 50 to 25,600. I know there was some speculation on if the 5D MKII sensor was the same one use in the 1DsMKIII. It looks like we now know that yes, it is, and it was improved upon. They are essentially calling the 1Ds MKIII 21MP sensor a 1st Generation design, and the 5D MKII sensor a 2nd Generation design with better high ISO output. David (aka BigBlueDodge)

Among these are faster AF data processing made possible by the DIGIC 4 Image Processor Up until now many people have stated that the AF function is offloaded on a dedicated AF processor (in discussion with the XXXD, XXD and 5D cameras). However Canon mentions that AF is improved due to the new Digic 4 chip. That would imply that the Digic chip has some level of involvement in the AF capabilities of the camera, which is contrary to the statement that AF processing is done by a dedicated chip. Therefore, even though the 50D and 5D MKII have the same AF system as their previous camera, the mere prescense of a faster Digic chip would logically give them faster AF capabilities over their predecessors, even though the systems are the same. The 5D MKII shutter has been completely redesigned and uses a two motor system (one to cock the shutter, and one to move the mirror). I suspect that this new shutter will make it's way into the XXD lineup in the release of the 60D (just speculation on my part) David (aka BigBlueDodge)

Someone else referred to it as "Marketing Speak" and I guess to some extent it is (I don't think I'm quite that jaundiced...) but it's interesting to get a little bit of info based in "Here's what we were thinking when we did this..."
