i need some opinions... some help... i have searched but i could not find anyone asking the same question.... just kind of similar stuff....
ok so... i am trying to decide between the 50d - 40d - xsi .... i am not a noob, i have experience with both film slrs and the xt/ nikon d40/d70 ... i work for a photo studio (doing post production) but may have an opportunity to shoot sports/dances and be a second shooter for weddings... right now i have NOTHING... no lenses, no flash.... what makes the most sense for me? im leanign towards the 50d but then i think i dont need that much camera? i trust you guys so what do you think?????

thanks in advance for any opinions ;)

How much money do you have to invest? If you are somewhat limited, you might consider getting the XSI and putting the rest into a good lense and speedlite flash.

XSi seems like a great improvement over an already good XTi.

For sports? For weddings? I don't think the XSi will cut it. I would suggest the 40D and some good glass if you're on a tight budget. If you can flow it, get the 40D and some REALLY good glass. I don't think the 50D would really be worth it for you go out and spend that much on a body not much better than its predecessor - unless you find 15mp important for some reason.

get a 40D

i think this is the direction im headed to... correct me if im wrong but the 50d doesnt offer anything significant to warrant the 300$ price differene over the 40d correct?

i know the screen is better (who really uses that anyway?) and the mp is higher (again who uses 15 mp?)

thanks again

yeah, you can get a 40D for relatively cheap now. The 5 mp increase is the big thing. Also, supposedly, noise control at higher ISOs though I'm not entirely convinced. 40D seems the way to go.

I have the 40D with 17-85, it is great. The 5mp increase is IMO a negative as it will give greatly increased file sizes which (I) don't need. The only thing on the 50D that I feel is an improvement is the screen, which is a big improvement.

That's the worst reason ever! If you can't handle a couple more megabytes per file for more ability to crop and enlarge, then maybe digital photography isn't for you! The only thing that could be a negative about MP increases is increased noise or decreased light sensitivity due to smaller pixel sizes or other things along that route. Ridiculous how many people complain about increased file sizes. Get a 1 TB external hard drive for like $120 and you're set for the next year or more! Go back to your 2 MP point-and-shoots, then. Jeez.

bannedPermanent ban

print size at 300 dpi
let's see, 10mp - 8.5 x 12 ish
huumm, 15mp - 10 x 15 ish give or take
not exacts but in the ball park.
would depend on the main stream print size your going to turn out all the time.
Depends in sports if you can get what you want, without cropping.
I use 5D's I'm kinda wait till the frame is filled before I take the shot. If you chase it, your gona need to crop more often.
Depends on how you shoot.

I've been comparing my 5D's to whats out there now for How I shoot.
I Started looking at the 5DII's but im starting to have second thought's. go here and look at the math side of it if you want.

then go look at Can's web site and see if you can get some full res photos to compare or somewhere else for that matter.
It's never, always about the #er's, that's the easy part (sorta) the rest is in the Eye's

Are you looking for a used 40D or a new one? The 50D is under a grand with the Canon $100 rebate and buying it from Amazon. Pretty hard deal to beat and you have the latest body, and in theory, the longest life for the dollar.
