I have a mad idea for a possible project next summer which would require me to be shooting landscapes into the sun, with the sun actually in the frame. To get the effects I want, I reckon I'll need to use a lens with a focal length of 16mm or less.

Ordinarily I'd just reach for the trusty EF-S 10-22mm. But before I do that, it would be really helpful to know whether there are any other ultra-wide options out there which are significantly better at controlling flare.

Any suggestions? (Canon or third-party. Or even Noink - I could use my D70 if I really really have to.) Have you experience of any ultra-wides that were particularly good (or particularly bad!) in this department? Have you seen any comparisions published? Have you seen this topic discussed elsewhere?

Thanks in advance for your help.

No, you've got the #1 UWA flare performer available in the 10-22. It's fantastic. Not unlike the 17-40L, but maybe even better.

Control flare by using your lens hood and shoot without having the sun in the photo.

Huh? How is that helpful? He specifically said he would be shooting with the sun in the frame!

Anyhow, the 10-22 does a marvelous job of shooting with the sun right in the frame. It controls flare amazingly well. There is nothing more you need! :)

One of the most surprising things about the 10-22 was how well it could shoot into the Sun -
