I was just wondering if there was any way it would be possible to use the built in flash and my 580EXII together? I havent seen anyone do this thus far and thinking what a shame it was to not be able to use the built in flash with the flashgun remotely triggered somehow?

No you can not.
(A big complaint from Canon users.)

The only way would be to use the PC port on your camera assuming you have a xxD series. You could connect the 580EX via cable or RF trigger and set it to manual mode.

Any way possible? Sure, get an optical trigger for the 580ex to use off camera. They are cheap and can be had from many places. Check out FlashZebra for such triggers.

To prevent premature flashulation from the E-TTL pre-flash, you'll need to hit the * button to fire the pre-flash, wait for the slave to recycle, then take your shot within 16 seconds.

It's a royal pain, but it can be done. However, a PC cord will cost about the same as an optical slave and work without the fuss.

You can use a optical trigger that cost about $10 and you will have to get a hotshoe mount with a PC plug. Talk with Flashzilla he shold have everything.

The hot shoe to PC port converters that I've seen will all prevent the onboard flash to pop up.
