hey POTN

i'm usually pretty good about watching out for scams and whatnot, but im trying to sell one of my lenses on craigslist. i got an email this morning, and this is what it said.

Hi Seller,
Thanks for the response, I'm about to send u a mail on how we are going to meet up later today so i can pay u in cash but I'm sorry, i wouldn't be able to make it for the pickup as i have already had in mind to do later today cos i count it to be very risky and dangerous due to what i was told by my mom concerning what happened to my sister yesterday. I'm sorry to have talk to u this way but i will appreciate it if u could understand and still sell this item to me all the same and to show my readiness to have the item and not to loose it to another buyer, i want to make an offer of additional payment of $245 which will cover the shipping of the item via USPS/EMS Express Mail International to my son whom i intend to buy it for as a Xmas gift and for holding u at ransom which i don't intend to do. And to make this transaction safe, secure and non risky, i will like to pay u via my paypal account. So i will appreciate it if u could send me your paypal email or a payment request via paypal so i can proceed with the payment later today. Thanks for your cooperation and your response will be highly appreciated

sounds kinda fishy to me doesnt it? but its through paypal and not some western union this time...

thanks

It looks fine to me (but I am in a secure place with no access to any sharp objects)

International - first sign of concern - - they will pay you with paypal and when the funds go bad paypal will take it from your account-- the package will be shipped and your person will not contact you.

EDIT-- do a search on the forum for the guy who sent his new Mark III to a person-- through paypal.......to an address actually in the US-- but when the funds went bad...... paypal went into his bank account and withdrew the amount.

It's a scam.

Anything involving international shipping, or anything international for that matter, is ALWAYS a scam.

Craig's List is basically only good for face to face local transactions paid with cash. Anything else, forget it.

Classic scam technique. Poor English, offshore shipping, and paypal info request. NO

I've got to disagree with that statement! There is another World outside of the US you know. And we're not all dishonest scumbags.

But in the case of this particular transaction, I wouldn't go anywhere near it. All you're really looking for is a straightforward transaction, and this one isn't even close. Don't touch it.

I am pretty sure the comment made was in context of local craiglist offerings.... in which case, the statement holds. Post a local sale item in various regions, then state overseas or strange shipping requests = scam.

Any time someone wants to complicate the very basic process of trading money for product, they're scamming you.
