Hi there - newbie here

My wife has just ordered a G6. It's her 40th birthday next week and I would like to buy her a wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens and a closeup lens. I have been in touch with a number of camera shops in London, all who are telling me different things about what adaptors I need for which lenses. It doesn't seem abundantly clear on the various websites I've tried, including Canon's one. I was thinking of getting the WCDC58N, the CU58250D and the TCDC58N. Do I need the LADC58D or the LADC58B or the LADC48B or some combination of the above? Also, are those the best lenses to get or would people advise something else?

Your help would be appreciated!

Richard

I would stick to the LA-DC58D Lens Adapter which will accept 58mm lenses. It is made to be used with the wide angle lens WC-DC58N, Tele-Converter TC-DC58N, Close-up Lens 250D There are alot of lenses out ther but alot are not the quality of Canon. I would stick with Canon. I feel everything seems to work together better if you just stick with the same brand name. Not to say there is not alot of top quality lenses out there.

Thanks

Jason

Thanks Jason

That's kind of what I'd worked out, but both camera shops that I tried insisted that I needed the 58B adaptor as well! I queried this but they said you need both. Didn't believe it, which is why I asked on here.

I'm quite happy to stick to Canon - just wondered with all this talk of 52mm things if maybe people were recommending other WA lenses. Not a camera expert, as you've probably gathered... ;)

As far as I know all you need is the 58mm. I would keep an eye on theis to see if anyone has any other thoughts.

Swannie,

also read some of the other threads (like this one) here on conversion lenses!
I think you can't really go wrong with Canon lenses, but there are other options.

Also good: Olympus
Possibly avoid: Crystal optics, Opteka, Digital optics

Best regards,
Andy

Thanks Andy

Yeah, I had already read that thread, hence my confusion! someone was talking about having 3 Lensmate adaptors etc - how many flipping adaptors does one need?

:)

Keep the replies coming - the more info I have, the better chance I stand of getting a package that works!

Richard,

that really depends on what lenses you want to mount :D

If you plan to go the Canon route then the 58 mm adapter should be sufficient.

The lensmate adapter is nice, because it's made from metal instead of plastic. Feels nicer. Might not be exactly easy on the (plastic) threads of the camera, but most people (myself included) like the solid feel.

Another issue is that a 58 mm adapter blocks the viewfinder more than a 52 mm adapter ... but once you put a wide angle lens on top, this will be a lot larger than the adapter, anyway.

The only reason I see to get other conversion lenses than the Canon ones, is if the Canon ones are prohibitively expensive or if other ones are significantly better.

I personally went with the Olympus WCON-08 and the Kenko LD-20 on my G2 with a 52 mm Kenko adapter in 2003 because these lenses provided great quality at about 50% of the price of the corresponding Canon lenses. Had the Canon lenses been only 25% more expensive, I would have gotten them.

Another idea is to search eBay, sometimes there are legitimate photo shops offering new equipment at a discount. I got my WCON-08 from an authorized dealer about 30% cheaper than the regular store price. But you might have to be lucky to find something in time for the birthday.

Best regards,
Andy

PS: And WELCOME TO THE FORUM! Be sure to point it out to your wife once you have succeeded in surprising her at her birthday :D

Another thing that if I were you maybe before you buy all of the lens adapters I would think about getting a flash. It makes a all the difference in the world. I would get the Canon Speedlite 420EX. I have one and love it. You can turn the head toward the ceiling or the wall where the flash can bounce.(http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=206436&is=USA (external link))

Thanks folks

She's already got a flash - her G2 has just packed up and it's qualified for an insurance package, so we're quite pleased! Viewfinder shouldn't be an issue, as she uses the screen pretty exclusively.

Strange how the camera shops couldn't get it right - one said "Oh the adaptor's bundled with it, you need a different one for every lens". Another said "you need to buy all 3 adaptors".

Cheers anyway - I'll keep you informed of my progress.

Richard

Richard, I do know that if you go with the 58mm adaptor you can use any of the new lenses that Canon makes for the G6. You do not have to buy any more adaptors. If you buy a 52mm lensmate you may have to buy different brand lenses to get all of the lenses that you are talking about. Which is not bad if you get the top quality ones. Good luck and happy we all could help.;)

That makes a lot of sense ... from the shops point of view

Best regards,
Andy
