Since I got the 5D mark II, I have been extremely pleased with the high noise control. My initial "observations" were that the 5D Mark II was about a full stop better in terms of noise control than the 1D Mark III.

While I certainly am not a professional reviewer, I was certainly interested to see whether my observation was correct or at least close.

Some things to note in my test:

  1. All shots via tripod
  2. All shots used each camera's self timer
  3. All shots used a custom white balance via a gray card
  4. All shots used the Canon 24-70 2.8 @ 51mm
  5. All shots were at f5.6
  6. All shots were done from ISO 100 - 6400
  7. No in camera noise reduction
  8. No noise reduction done via ACR or Photoshop

I thought the 5Dmk2 was about a stop better too, but looks more like 1/2 a stop, I stand corrected....Thanks for doing this.

No problem. I had myself convinced that the 5D Mark II was the full stop better. I no longer believe that. I probably should have done an SRAW one as well, but didn't think about it until after everything was taken apart.

Pretty impressive for the 5D considering the resolution difference.

I just added another one of the 5D mark II downsized from 21MP to 10MP. This almost starts to look about a full stop better.
