Hi all.

I have yet to make the jump into the DSLR arena, yet.
but I already have opinions....

so there I was at my daughter's holiday party
and they were presenting a holiday song all the while dancing under black light (they were wearing white gloves)

and there was a mother taking pics at a rate with her eos 20d.
flash was bouncing everywhere
it was quite annoying.
but I said to myself - hey - maybe she's going for an effect that I don't understand.

So I asked her what ISO and aperture she was using and if she caught the effect of black light and the white gloves.

She looked at me as if I had just landed from the moon. She then informed me that she had no idea what I was talking about. I realized then, that I had better be quiet (preschool parent fights can be quite viscious !!!)

and then fuming to myself, I muttered and muttered and muttered....

hell, if you're going to buy a tool, you might as well know what the three basic concepts in photography are!!! jeez! I am saving and saving for something like what she has, and she uses it as a point and shoot.

Sigh.

Too bad she wouldn't trade.

thanks for letting me rant

happy holidays

CTB

And how many people bought P&S or even SLRs and had absolutely no idea what they were doing? This has nothing to do with film vs. digital. A friend of mine is just as ignorant with digital as he has been with film all along. He could not even tell you why he always bought ISO200 film - it was what the salesman sold him the first time he bough the camera and from that day on he always bought 200IS film. He shoots his digital Rebel usingt the square green setting (yep auto everything) and enjoys it tremendously. So what? Not everyone gets into photography the way we do.

When you get the equipment you are saving for, chances are , your pics will be way nicer, but don't blame her, she wants nice pics of her toddler , thats all.
As before said
Not everyone gets into photography the way people gets around these forums

Yes, you are jealous.;)

Spend enough time hanging out with parents and you will notice that they are often willing to buy a reasonably expensive camera trying to get better photos of their children, but they often don't have the time to learn how to use it well.

I see lots of folks at my kids events shooting with nice cameras in green box mode.

This is something I learned long ago. I'm DEEP into the HT hobby (even run my own forum (www.hometheaterlounge.com (external link))) and it is an exercise in frustration to think that some level of experience or appreciation should accompany gear. Its usually plain and simple, a matter of money. If I got pissed by every person with a nicer TV (maybe some of you), more expensive speakers, etc. who didn't have it set-up right or didn't understand the technical jargon, settings etc. I'd be in the freaking nuthouse.

lol. (chuckling at myself)

all of you are right.
and I agree that there is an "amount" of jealousy (in the title!)
and i hope that she derives enjoyment from every picture that she takes of her child...

but....

grrr. :)

Hey, for me it still comes down to their reaction. If they concede they don't really know much that's cool... but when they try to act like a know it all it comes off pretty douchey.

Well, speaking about the specific individual....
I hadn't been impressed by her when it comes to any other subject in which we have had contact, let alone photography, so I supose that I shouldn't have been that surprised.

but y'all are right in that even though I care in general about photography, that doesn't obligate any one else.....

There was a quote to that effect....
the best way to bore your audience is to speak about your hobby (assuming that they don't share the same hobby)
or something like that! :)

sigh

gotta get over the jealousy, gotta get over the jaelousy, gotta get over the jealousy....(this week's mantra) :)

Not to start a heated debate, but why? I'm sure if a person in another hobby saw something of yours it could drive them nuts, but the bottom line is, its none of their (or your) business... Its a waste of energy getting upset with people for not being as "into" something as you are.

Really, I can't understand it either, would you enjoy people saying you aren't technical enough? What does it matter if she is happy? and as for the stereo sound set up, mine would drive you nuts, it is set for me, and my hearing loss so I canlisten to it through hearing aids. Why would i want to change it because someone else says it is wrong? It is for my enjoyment, I shoot mainly av 'cos I enjoy it, she shoots what she wants, with what she wants, and enjoys it.

Eat ya heart out :)

Hey Imahawki,
Just curious, any chance you're running horn speakers in your HT setup?

I apologize to the OP for hijacking the thread...
Cheers all!

Hey now.
I am all for people enjoying whichever tool they purchase for any reason.
I have nothing against her in that regards...or any other either.
I hope that I did not come across like that.

If she enjoys, then I wish her (and others like her) the best of health and happiness.

I guess that I was just a bit shocked that even the basics were completely foreign to her...I was naive, I suppose. Its kinda like hearing someone who owns a car asking why fuel is necessary......or not even caring.....
Never mind. I didn't mean to start anything here.
As I said, I wish her the best.....

Just because one has the money to buy a corvette doesn't mean that the person knows how to drive it. Unfortunately.

Your post sounds similar to mine, except my buddy had a L lens and 50D, and didn't know what a 'shutter speed' was.

Having a SLR doesn't mean that you will take good pictures. If you're just going to use it for PS, might as well get a PS. It is like buying a Corvette and buying a Automatic trans version. My two cents.
