Just because one has the money to buy a corvette doesn't mean that the person knows how to drive it. Unfortunately.

Your post sounds similar to mine, except my buddy had a L lens and 50D, and didn't know what a 'shutter speed' was.

Having a SLR doesn't mean that you will take good pictures. If you're just going to use it for PS, might as well get a PS. It is like buying a Corvette and buying a Automatic trans version. My two cents.

ROFL at the thought of an automatic corvette.
hehehe

I bet you she is doing a little better with the slr than she would have done with point and shoot, mainly b/c of shorter shutter lag, and better S/N, and faster FPS which is what she was hoping for when she bought the camera. One of my employees has asked me for my help in buying an slr, and I know he is going to be shooting in green box almost the entire time. but his son is playing sports, and his point and shoot with 20x zoom is just not cutting it anymore.
Who knows, may be some day she will actually read the manual.

Wow , the past 24 hours have seen alot of loathing here.

They should give a basic DVD out with the kits though.

What was the light like anyways? And what lens was she using? While you might be annoyed at her lack of knowledge, flash might also have been the only option. Don't forget, the ISO noise on the 20D isn't the prettiest.

It's interesting. I just got into DSLR and am having fun with it. Read the manual, read about all the settings, practicing as much as the weather will let me. I've been getting some really good photos and lots of bad ones

I come home yesterday and my mother-in-law's visiting and she has a new DSLR and a telephoto to go with it. I ask her a couple questions about it and realize she doesn't have a clue. My wife and I are speculating that she gives it to us in a couple months after finding out she doesn't know how to use it and it's just sitting around collecting dust.

My thoughts are, if you're going to spend extra on something, at least make an effort to understand what it's for.

but that is not the case for a lot of people. people who have money make it seem like digital photography is a fad since equipment is now more affordable. i have nothing against these kinds of people because they might or will eventually find out that taking good pictures is not as simple as just pointing your camera & shoot. pros & true enthusiasts will benefit from the huge influx of "beginners" because camera companies will continue to develop better (hopefully) & more affordable equipment.

downside of this is they make their new cameras more attractive for the "beginners" & not for the said pros & enthusiasts. examples are the 50D & the G10. though both very good cameras, they could have been better if instead of cramming more megapixels, they could have just improved the ISO handling of both bodies. sadly, megapixels sell cameras.

Hi all.

I have yet to make the jump into the DSLR arena, yet.
but I already have opinions....

so there I was at my daughter's holiday party
and they were presenting a holiday song all the while dancing under black light (they were wearing white gloves)

and there was a mother taking pics at a rate with her eos 20d.
flash was bouncing everywhere
it was quite annoying.
but I said to myself - hey - maybe she's going for an effect that I don't understand.

So I asked her what ISO and aperture she was using and if she caught the effect of black light and the white gloves.

She looked at me as if I had just landed from the moon. She then informed me that she had no idea what I was talking about. I realized then, that I had better be quiet (preschool parent fights can be quite viscious !!!)

and then fuming to myself, I muttered and muttered and muttered....

hell, if you're going to buy a tool, you might as well know what the three basic concepts in photography are!!! jeez! I am saving and saving for something like what she has, and she uses it as a point and shoot.

Sigh.

Too bad she wouldn't trade.

thanks for letting me rant

happy holidays

sounds like you are suffering from control issues and gear envy. you should head over to the lens forum and check out the "wee rant" thread :D.

Would the flash going off not spoil the "blacklight effect" for the audience? And I thought that taking pictures of kids was frowned upon? Never mind, when you get your new camera at least you'll have the satisfaction of knowing what it can do.

Oh look another one of "those" threads..

Well, my initial reaction to this was "so what". However, now that i've though about it for a while, my reaction is now...so what?

I really couldn't care less if someone goes out and buys a 1DSMK3, sticks a 600F4L on the end of it and uses it as a door stop. If that's what they want to do with their money, good for them :)

I see people buying muscle cars that don't ever take them past 70 mph.
people want the best. It's all about looking like you know what you are doing.
I'm usually pretty amused when someone has a nice setup but can't tell me what an f-stop is, but that's the way it is these days.

Isn't that because american cars don't handle at anything over 40 mph ;)

Another one of these threads. I read another one a while ago when someone really was angry that this "old man" had a 1DsMKIII and was using it as a P&S.

So you have yet to make the jump into the DSLR arena and felt compelled to question someone who had a 20D with "flash bounding everywhere?" Flashes tend to do that you know? And besides, have you checked out her work?

Look at my gear list. I'm not the best out there. I'm not even one of the million best out there. I have a 9-5 and do this as a hobby. I am not a "pro"...whatever that means. They are so many talented photographers out there shooting "better" stuff with much less than I have.

If one of them came up to me like you did to that mother, and questioned me on it...my answer will simply be...

Because I can.

Proceeded by "You want what I have? Find a better paying gig..."

End of story...and really, that's just the truth. Grass is always greener.

I think the OP just need to concentrate on saving for his new camera and go out and have fun with it :)

In my opinion, I don't think anyone has to justify their knoweledge or level of skills to anyone let alone to strangers for having even the best equipment available in the market. If they can afford it, good on them!
