Unfortunately. Your post sounds similar to mine, except my buddy had a L lens and 50D, and didn't know what a 'shutter speed' was. Having a SLR doesn't mean that you will take good pictures. If you're just going to use it for PS, might as well get a PS. It is like buying a Corvette and buying a Automatic trans version. My two cents. ROFL at the thought of an automatic corvette. 7D/5dIII

One of my employees has asked me for my help in buying an slr, and I know he is going to be shooting in green box almost the entire time. but his son is playing sports, and his point and shoot with 20x zoom is just not cutting it anymore. Read the manual, read about all the settings, practicing as much as the weather will let me. I've been getting some really good photos and lots of bad ones I come home yesterday and my mother-in-law's visiting and she has a new DSLR and a telephoto to go with it. I ask her a couple questions about it and realize she doesn't have a clue. My wife and I are speculating that she gives it to us in a couple months after finding out she doesn't know how to use it and it's just sitting around collecting dust. My thoughts are, if you're going to spend extra on something, at least make an effort to understand what it's for. but that is not the case for a lot of people. people who have money make it seem like digital photography is a fad since equipment is now more affordable. i have nothing against these kinds of people because they might or will eventually find out that taking good pictures is not as simple as just pointing your camera & shoot. pros & true enthusiasts will benefit from the huge influx of "beginners" because camera companies will continue to develop better (hopefully) & more affordable equipment. I have yet to make the jump into the DSLR arena, yet. but I already have opinions.... ![]() so there I was at my daughter's holiday party and they were presenting a holiday song all the while dancing under black light (they were wearing white gloves) and there was a mother taking pics at a rate with her eos 20d. flash was bouncing everywhere it was quite annoying. but I said to myself - hey - maybe she's going for an effect that I don't understand. So I asked her what ISO and aperture she was using and if she caught the effect of black light and the white gloves. She looked at me as if I had just landed from the moon. She then informed me that she had no idea what I was talking about. I realized then, that I had better be quiet (preschool parent fights can be quite viscious !!!:rolleyes ![]() and then fuming to myself, I muttered and muttered and muttered.... hell, if you're going to buy a tool, you might as well know what the three basic concepts in photography are!!! jeez! I am saving and saving for something like what she has, and she uses it as a point and shoot. Sigh. Too bad she wouldn't trade. thanks for letting me rant happy holidays CTB sounds like you are suffering from control issues and gear envy. you should head over to the lens forum and check out the "wee rant" thread http://instagram.com/edraderphotography/

And I thought that taking pictures of kids was frowned upon? Never mind, when you get your new camera at least you'll have the satisfaction of knowing what it can do.

I read another one a while ago when someone really was angry that this "old man" had a 1DsMKIII and was using it as a P&S. ceriltheblade wrote in post #6919491 Hi all.
