Nicksan, I agree with you! Let other people be. Why do we care whether someone with a 1MsMkIII ever takes it out of green box or not. If it doesn't effect us, let it go.

Some stuff that says "Canon" on it and a happy trigger finger.

Just like every single person here, I didnt know crap about crap when I started, but I spent the time and learned as much as I could. Now I can take crappy pictures in "M" LOL

We are always our own worst critic I guess :)
Some crackpots actually like my pics LOL

Anywho, dont be so harsh on her, you never know how or why she got that camera. Could have been a gift or an awesome garage sale find. I do agree the flash will ruin the affect but she doesnt know that; like said before she just wants shots of her todler.

Another one of these threads. I read another one a while ago when someone really was angry that this "old man" had a 1DsMKIII and was using it as a P&S.

So you have yet to make the jump into the DSLR arena and felt compelled to question someone who had a 20D with "flash bounding everywhere?" Flashes tend to do that you know? And besides, have you checked out her work?

Look at my gear list. I'm not the best out there. I'm not even one of the million best out there. I have a 9-5 and do this as a hobby. I am not a "pro"...whatever that means. They are so many talented photographers out there shooting "better" stuff with much less than I have.

If one of them came up to me like you did to that mother, and questioned me on it...my answer will simply be...

Because I can.

Proceeded by "You want what I have? Find a better paying gig..."

End of story...and really, that's just the truth. Grass is always greener.

hit 'em with your checkbook, Nick :D.

there either seems to be more of this gear envy going on or maybe i'm just self-conscious because i recently got the 1ds mark III .... which btw does not have a green box :D.

i think its not only jealousy, but a form of intellectual snobbery - we prolly all do it at one point or another, even if its just a smug feeling as we observe, or an attempt to 'help' the 'ignorant' stranger by offering unsolicited advice, or recounting the story later to our more knowledgeable contemporaries

my proof: just imagine a parent has the SAME camera/lens as you but is using it 'wrong' - you'd prolly still have the same reaction, except without the added "geez if only i had HER camera" part

Heh! It's kind of like the boom in SUVs, where you could switch from Automatic Transmission to 4WD. I have on occasion scratched my head as to why city-dwellers would buy these expensive gas-guzzlers when they never actually went out of the city to put the vehicle through its paces.

I asked a friend of mine who bought one -- a single mother of two, and she said it was both for the ruggedness and the assurance that if she needed 4WD it was there.

Who am I to criticize someone who stays in Automatic, even if I would like to take a 4WD out in the wilderness so it could get me to cool photo ops?

Or, let's say you have a nice car -- not necessarily a 'Vette, but still nice and solid with a high-hp/performance engine, that had a switch that could change you from Auto to Manual transmission. Plenty of people would stay in auto, enjoying the high hp with the gains in acceleration, auto low gear, etc, and would never bother to go to manual. Is that bad? No. Is it making the utmost of the cars capablilities? No, but it still out-performs a "P&S" car:)! So, what's to criticize?

On the other hand, picture that Auto/4WD owner taking the SUV out into a snowy mountain road and, because he/she had never bothered to RTFM getting stuck. That would suck!

I would hope that DSLR owners would at least take the time to read the manual, but even that might be asking too much. My daughter with an XTi has probably spent more time on the phone asking me how to do this or that than she has reading the dang book. Oh well, we each have to find our own way...:)!

because these vehicles were successfully marketed by the companies that are now begging for a handout to ostensibly save them from extinction :D.

Uh....regular cars have 4WD nowadays.

Ruggedness, whatever....it is just an excuse to compensate for the lack of testicles. (I probably will get slapped for that one)

None. The only reason for buying automatic corvette is if you commute in NY or LA every day. (or a bad left leg) It is for people with $$$ but don't know how to drive.

People want results with less effort, that's basically what it comes down to.

Daffunda: SLAAAAP!!!!

Daffunda: I agree with the Auto comment though :P
Well to a point, I dont think I would have liked my 70' Chevelle as much with a stick. I cant have a mustang with an Auto though, not even if I got my 70' Mach1 that I have been dieing for.

The wife has a 71' Mach1 thats a 351C 4V with a C6 behind it and its pretty nice but its not a drag car so a stick isnt needed.

It really depends on the car and driver, thats why auto Corvettes are sold.

Oh as for the Auto/Manual trans in one...

You could call modern Tiptronics (VW, other names for different companies) an auto/manual.

Also what about sequential clutchless transmission? Paddle shifters?

Here ya go, found some info for the more technical guys. http://en.wikipedia.org …mi-automatic_transmission (external link)

They exist simply for the reason Tony said, because some people like the option.
They are expensive though, shoot Ford sells one for $12k thats race duty but I wont be putting one behind my mod motor any time soon. Costs less for me to build my engine how I want it than to buy that trans.

Thanks... BTW.. took it to a local quick oil change place... Sitting there when all of a sudden I here the guy in the pit yell, "OMG! This one has been off road!!" I got a good laugh!

BTW, I got a lot of flak for having an automatic in my Mustang... thing if you are a bracket racer, you can't beat an automatic for consistency! ;)

and to get back on the original subject... I'm of the mind live and let live... if they can afford the very expensive DSLR only to use it as a point and shoot... more power to them!

What cracks me up is the guy in Row ZZZ with his P&S and using the built in flash... LOL
