Has anyone ever managed to get a totally sharp shot out of their 100-400 at 400mm? I havn't! Or is it my Canon 1DmkIII?

Depends what you mean by 'totally sharp'. I'm very happy with mine.

There are many variables involved in getting a sharp shot at 400mm ... so you need to post some samples with EXIF data attached. The lens has a reputation for variable quality but so do photographers ;-)a

the problem could also be you. hard for us to know without samples. these were taken with the same camera and lens, and i am happy with them :D.

I love my 100-400mm and would not trade it for any other lens in the Canon lineup.

By my standards this is pretty sharp considering she was swimming and I was hand holding the lens at 400mm.

Once I changed my 100-400 for a 100-400 that worked right....SHARP all the time!
