If you had only $1000 to spend on your lens collection, what would you buy?

Starting from scratch (no lenses at all) and only 1k to spend, what would you buy? I am very interested in everyone's opinions b/c this is sort of my situation.

Thanks in advance.

If I had a Full Frame i.e. 5d or 5Dii, I would have the 24-105L. I hear its a great walk-around lens on a FF body...

What do you like to shoot? That is the main thing.

24-70 f/2.8 for FF, 17-55 IS for crop... neither are really quite long enough, but if it's only one lens, I want it to be fast and cover the midrange.

I was thinking of general shooting, friends and family (portraits), landscapes, vacation, etc. I have an XSI so I was thinking Sigma 30mm, 85mm, and a cheap general zoom.

But that's three lenses... you said just one.

Those would do the trick, though.

I initially thought one lens too, looking back at the OP, it appears we mis-read...

Oops, you're right. In that case, I'd get a 50mm f/1.4 (or Sigma 30mm 1.4) and a 28-135 IS, though that still leaves you without anything really wide.

dwash_72,
Of course it really depends on the user and the camera they use ;)

I personally would get a 10-22 and a 100mm macro but would start saving my $$$$ and/or looking for used so I could get more

Tamron 17-50 2.8 and Canon 70-200 2.8 (if you can find the pair for under $1000) or the 70-200 f4...

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!
