I'd go 50 f1.8, 18-55 kit lens and 70-300 IS.

If I only had $1,000 to spend for an XSi, I would get:

a used Canon 10-22 for $500 (hard to find for $500 but can be found),
a used Tamron 28-75 for $300, and
a new/used Canon 55-250 for $220.

That's about $1,020, close enough to $1,000.


-FF and crop bodies w/ some lenses and S90-

And here... except I went with Nifty and my total cost of all lenses was just around $700.

If you don't need IS, you can go with Canon 70-200 f/4 which from what I read is an excellent lens. That + Tammy + Nifty = just above $1000.

go with the EF-S 17-85 IS (Great all around) and EF 70-300 IS

with this season discounts it will be around 1K
and yes some people do not like the 17-85 > do not worry for your needs it will do a great job :p
