Have any of you ever replaced the wide angle diffusor on the 430ex? I see that I can buy a new one for about $20.00. I tried taking the 2 screws out at the flash head but the plastic wouldn't come apart. Is there a trick to getting it apart? Once I get it apart how do I install the diffusor? Is this something I can do? Or am I going to have to send it to Canon for $100+?

As it is now, when I dropped my flash on the carpet, the diffusor came out. Now, the display flashes if I don't have it at 90 degrees. I don't know if this is a big deal, but I figure it should be fixed.

I never did that, but as far as I know there are more screws to take out under the round covers on the side of the flash head. One is the cover around the tilt-unlock button and the other opposite to it.

Good luck.

I just verified and it's as I said above.

I have the Speedlite 550EX Parts Catalog.pdf that I don't know where I downloaded from, but I can send it to you if you PM me your email address.

Or perhaps someone else has the link to it.

Mind the capacitor's charge. It's easily lethal. People had the flash off for two weeks before dismantling it, and they still got mildly zapped.

I didn't realize that the round covers come off. As far as the charge - maybe I'll just forget it and send the thing in. I took the batteries out and figured that would be enough.
