I haven't seen my niece in quite a while so when she showed up looking like this, I knew I had to shoot some quick!! She has promised me that she will make a visit to my studio when I get it set up to do some more. This girl is VERY photogenic!

She is photogenic, but I do not like the placement of the right hand in #2. Also, how did your prints turn out of this? There seems to be a bit of posterization in the BG and may show in prints.

Nice shots.

Did you go for that mascara look? A little thick for my liking...

+1 on the Mascara
Looks like she is missing eyelashes on about half of the lids, especially her left eye.
Catch light in eyes at 9 oclock is out of place, always try to get catch light at 11 or 1 oclock.
Shes is cute, her eyes are missing the umph. A little flat with no sparkle.

Pretty girl. Just don't like the lashes in #1. She should also have combed her hair as there are too many fly-aways. The big glass earings also bother me slightly. Overall though great work.

Thanks for the replies and constructive criticism! I actually had nothing to do with her makeup as she had it that way when she arrived. As far as I can remember she has always worn her mascara that way.....I agree that it looks like her lashes are thin and that may actually be the case! I always miss the flyaway hairs as I don't look hard enough I guess. I need to pack a brush and comb and make my models use them before my shoots. I was shooting lots of people of all sizes in a hurry so the key light placement was probably a bit too straight on and too low to get the proper catchlights. I didn't really know that there was a proper place for them to be, so I guess I learned something new again!! I like it when that happens. The lighting does appear to be a bit flat and the problem was probably that the key light was camera left and she was also facing that way..... probably would have looked better if she was facing the other way, now that I think about it. This is still a learning process for me and I truly appreciate the help I am receiving here. I look at my first attempts at portraiture and I can see a huge difference already and I am still a basic newbie!!! Bring on the C&C...I love it!

Actually the prints look very nice. There were some wrinkles in the BG that I cloned out as I didn't have the time to do any ironing or steaming if that is what you are seeing perhaps. I really need to get me some seamless paper and some wall board for the floor! I couldn't really think of anyplace else for her to put her right hand.....any ideas of a good location? I admit that my posing skills are very lacking at the moment but I am getting a bit better as time goes on. Thanks for the input!

No worries! Sometimes I can't pose people too. LOL! That is when my wife helps. I would have her hand by her side relaxed. This just makes me think of the TUMMS commercials. ;)

The photo's look great. agree with the advise on the pose, and the mascara comments. But the lighting and shots are great.

Thanks for the compliments! I believe she wanted to put her right hand where she did because her top hung straight down and made it look like she was pregnant (or fat) of which neither is the case. I need to get her back with some other outfits and a MUA.

I think they look great. I really don't don't get why so many people want the people in their pictures to look dramatically different than they do in real life. Without ever meeting your niece I think you probably captured her spot on.

Oh yeah, are these really high key? I thought high key had that blown out look. Of course I could be wrong!

She's a very pretty girl, and these are lovely shots (nice lighting), but her smile looks forced and the second pose makes her look like she's 'sucking it in'. Also, her mascara in the first picture is quite distracting and unattrative. The photography side of these is wonderful, though.

WOW!!!! GOOD EYE! I actually did remove her nose piercing at it was just barely visible and very distracting in the original pic. You guys are good!

Believe me there is nothing for her to "suck in"....I would be surprised if she weighs more than 100 pounds and she is about 5'4" tall! She hasn't done any modeling that I am aware of so she will need some time to relax in front of the camera before I can get the real good stuff from my sessions with her. Looking forward to future time with her in the studio.
