I am doing my year end purchase of a new external hard drive and asking you folks for a little direction. I typically pick up a 500gig wd mybook-- they work well for me-- I typically get two--- one for storage and one to back up the files--- this year I might get three.
Anyone know best price places?

Thanks!

The best no-hassle price/GB deal I've seen for a My Book lately was around .11/GB, so near that is worth buying.

I think newegg probably has the best prices for them here (external link).

If you want to be adventurous you can go with an offbrand 1 TB drive for $110 here (external link).

My experience has been that there just aren't really any smoking-hot hard drive deals around (for now), but if you want to wait, keep an eye on this deals page (external link).

Actually they are cheaper at Amazon, and for another $15 you get the 1TB version, which I use. I have 4 MyBooks (need to buy a 5th one real soon) and they really work very well.

If you're shopping locally, here's a good site to check on the sales each week.

Also, believe it or not, give Walmart.com a look.

I've been buying from Newegg for years.
Their prices are always competitive, they run a lot of daily specials and their customer ratings are always very helpful when trying to decide on products with lots of choices like external hard drives.

Their service was better when they used Fedex rather then UPS, but still very good.
Everything always ships within 24 hours.

I recently ordered a $12 item that took 9 days to arrive because UPS mis-routed the item. I sent them an FYI email and they gave me a $10 credit on my next order.
They are a class act.

The problem I've had with adding more and more external drives was all the wall warts and cables. I finally bought this and am glad I did:

With this docking station you use just one USB cable and wall wart. You simply buy any old SATA internal hard drive and plug it in. As cheap as drives have become it really makes a lot of sense, at least for me.

I just picked up two WD Mybook 500GBs today from Best Buy for $89 each ($72 US) to attach to my HP Media Server that's on its way. Not sure if they had any deals like this in the states but today was the last day of their boxing day deals here.

There used to be Canon gear here but it disappeared.
