i have just bought a 5D classic.. which was the last one in the shop (for the same price as a 50D)

after reading up on the subject im feeling a temptation to sell it and go for the 50D instead

its for an all round camera including macro, portraits, landscapes but mainly want it for taking photos at parties, which im hoping will earn the money. (but will probablly be mainly with flash)

my understanding is that the 5D will be better at higher ISO (marginally) but the 50D will have better features .

(taken from another forum)//quote
Speed. Of every kind in every way the 50D is better - faster /better focus, faster FPS, faster operation overall (writing, display on LCD, startup, etc). HTP - highlight tone priority is a fantastic feature, the 50D has weather sealing and sensor cleaning too and is TWO generations newer on the processor and has live view (handy for quickie macro wedding detail shots). The 50 also does 14 bit raw - more DR is the advantage (5D does 12 bit)
//end quote

so, what would you do..

keep the 5D or go for the 50D

ps. sorry to drag up this subject again, i just cannot decide..

I have lots of camera bodies--- but do not have a 50D - I do have the 5D, 40D and pro bodies--- personally I think the 5D is much better than my 40D -- the body is fantastic-- but more importantly is what lenses you put on it.
My vote would be to keep the 5D.

Hold up how much is the 50d?

No offense to you but I'm tired of people comparing the 5D and 50D,they're just not comparable to me

i bought the 5D at the same price as the 50D... (just under £900)

when you say "not comparable" do you mean you would keep the 5D ?

and when you say not comparable, if you had the choice of two items for the same price , then surely that makes them comparable ?

A month ago, I was debating between the 50D and the 5D. After reading a lot about those two cameras and playing with a 50D in the store, I ended up getting a 5D. People say it is "old" technology... but it is still a fantastic camera.

I don't regret my decision...

5D uses better film. Not only is it a stop faster, but I find I can correct exposure in post processing much better from the 5D vs the 40D.

I assume the 50D is all the 40D was and more bells and whistles. But after owning an XT, 20D, 40D, and a 5D, the 5D is the only cam whose images make me think 'wow'.

I am in the same boat as you DynamiteTony. I just sold my 20d and picked up a 5d. While I think the 5d is great, I find the low light capabilities not to be that great. My testing showed only slight improvement over the 20d in noise. But the real catch was that I am finding I have to stop down the 5d significantly in order to achieve an adequate depth of field to keep things in focus. And once you stop down, you lose hand-hold-ability. So this negates any noise improvements you would see. Focusing is also blah on the 5d indoors. Keep in mind that the 50d has the option of a great 17-55 f/2.8 IS. The full frame doesn't have a comparable 2.8 lens with IS. Although this lens feels like a toy compared to the 24-105 f4 IS.

However I keep hearing so many good things about the 5d that I am going to keep it for a while and give it more of a chance.

Wow... 5D over 50D for sure.... IQ on the 5D is better than 50D. FF > 1.6x crop as well. And when will you honestly need to shoot 6fps?

Your decision should be based on what strengths you want in your camera. A 5D IS a FF camera, regardless of its older Digic III imaging chip and lower-res LCD. If you'd rather have better high-ISO noise capabilities in exchange for going to a 1.6x crop camera, then the 50D would be the body for you. Ideally, if you want the best of both worlds, you would get a 5DII.

I had the 40D and now the 50D and I can tell you that I hardly do PP on my RAW 50D files, exposure is much better on the 50D it almost never underexposes a problem the 40D had, the camera never overexposes neither, all the features the 50D has like micro adjustment, auto lighting optimizer, much better LCD screen etc, make the 50D a better camera than the 40D, I can't say anything about the 5D but if I were you I would go for the newer technology, well that is what I did ;), you have the 5D now so if you don't feel very satisfied I think you should try the 50D.
