My wife is showing some disloyalty. She is giving up her Canon 35mm film camera for a Nikon.

She likes my Canon 40D but she wants a Nikon as her first digital camera. She saw the ad for the Nikon D60 and asked me about it. After some research I am steering her towards a good used Nikon D70.

Do you presently own or owned a NiKon D70?

Have you used a Nikon D70?

What are the pros and cons of a Nikon D70?

I am considering buying a used D70 in mint condition with less than 15,000 actuations. Is it worth about $350?

The D70 uses a Nikon CCD, and noise/high-ISO performance is not on the same level as current Nikon or Canon CMOS cameras. Imho, a better option in the same price range would be a Canon 20D.

She seems determined to choose mediocrity!!

Back in teh days of 35mm, Nikon were generally accepted as the 'best' cameras to have. Since everyone's moved to digital it is just as generally accepted that Canon are the best. What is it about Nikon that has made her mind up? Especially considering the expense that buying a second set of lenses adds to the whole deal....

Where have you been the last year and a half? The D90, D300, D700 and D3 are essentially as good as or better than anything Canon has put out in the last few years.

Advertisements with Ashton Kutcher, maybe. :p

I had a D80 before I switched to Canon, which is the exact same camera lay out, just newer guts. I have to admit I really liked it. The nikons are as easy to use as canons- the menus and controls are different but the learning curve is about the same. I miss the command wheel on the back of canons when I'm using a nikon though. But conversely, I miss being able to set my color temperature without having to go through preview screen menus when I'm using a canon.

there are little quirks everywhere that can make or break a deal for anyone with either brand. you should have your wife compare them side by side if it's an option.

When she was growing up she saw more Nikons than Canons and she knew someone who had one. Somehow she sees Nikon as the preferred brand.

I would definitely try to steer her towards Canon (that is unless you're looking to make a switch). It is really all about the lenses, and it probably doesn't make much sense to maintain two lens collections if you are on any sort of a limited budget.

I own 2 Canon 35mm bodies (EOS 3 and Elan 7n) and one digital body plus Canon lenses. No plans on switching.

Looking at the 5D Mark II...

Seriously, I can't see any reason to have two different systems in the same household. If you were talking point-and-shoot, it would make no difference, but with the cost of lenses, even moderately good lenses, unless your names are Bill and Melinda it is better for someone to make some compromises and use the same system.

I look at this two ways.

1- Economical. To get your wife into photography with a Canon system would cost you maybe 1 lens and 1 body. You could then swap/share lenses and flash. Going Nikon means she will probably want her own standard/prime/telephoto lens collection. You are then going to be competing for new gear purchases

2- Emotional. Your wife wants a Nikon. Nikon makes fantastic cameras that are as just as good as Canon. No use fighting with the wife if that is what she wants. cameras are kind of a personal thing. Just like you don't want to give up Canon. So if the finances are there to support 2 lens collections, let it go. I find whenever I win an argument with the Mrs., I still lose. ;)

As for the D70, I wouldn't pay $350 for it when I could get a new D40 for the same price or a new D80 for $500 - body only.

If you do convince her to try canon, Adorama has refurb XTI and XT bodies for $250 and $300. You could then trade off your 24-70 and 17-50 standard lenses.

When I was considering C or N, I made my decision for Canon based on the fact that my sister shot Canon, and we could swap lenses. I'm sure I would have been completely satisfied had I chosen Nikon (ie, lens swapping notwithstanding).

Good point. However, she will be using the camera infrequently so a zoom like 18-135mm will be good enough.

The emotional is likely to win out here. Thankfully she is not as serious about photography like I am so I don't see her owning more than 2 lens.

I say ignore the d70. I was up between that and an XT way back when, and the XT just kicked its ass all day. not worth it to get a d70, try a 30d instead.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Buy the Canon 5d MK II for yourself and give your wife your 40D - The 40D is also your backup when she's not using it, and you can share the glass.
