I'm just wondering....every site I go to seems to talk about how great this current lens is except for the possibility of a back-focusing issue. And everyone knows that Canon knows about the problem.
Has anyone heard anything or have any idea regarding the possibility of a newer version/update of that lens that will presumably include a fix?

It's not a back-focusing issue. It's an optical limitation.

Ever wondered why there are so few f/1.2 lenses? I don't see the 50 f/1.2 being updated anytime soon.

85 MKII doesn't have the issue. That's a poor argument. They need to update the lens... plain and simple.

This effect will be greater the wider the lens is. It only occurs at a very specific range within a specific aperture range. Most people who own it doesn't seem to be all that bothered by it. If it was a simple back-focusing issue it would be solved on most modern cameras with micro-adjustment AF.

Maybe they could re-design the lens to get rid of this limitation altogether. But until they do you'll just have to use the Sigma, Tamron or Tokina versions? Oh that's right they don't make one. How about one of the Nikkor 50-range 1.2 lenses then? Chose between the reasonably priced but manual focus only 50 1.2 or the insanely expensive, manual focus, and discontinued-over-ten-years-ago Nikkor 58 1.2 then?

Is it really that big of a problem to need a whole redesign?

I've just noticed that the price for the 50L is slightly lower at a couple of places than it was a couple of weeks ago (Amazon, for example). By about 20 or 30 dollars.
Is that a sign that there may be a new version of the lens coming out soon?

Has nothing to do with focal length. The 85L has a floating element, the 50 1.2 lacks one. Until they add a floating element to the 50 1.2, it will always have the focus shift (adding one would likely increase size, price). There's a good reason why most f/1.2 lenses are manual focus lenses. The 85L is somethin' special, Canon pulled off something great when designing that one.

As much as I like the 85L as a portrait lens, I much prefer the 50L ‘s limitations over the 85L’s as a walk around/street lens. If to correct the “focus shift” they would have to add a floating element making the 50L like the heavy, slow by wire auto focusing, and sort of manual focusing while in auto mode 85L…No thanks.

I've always found complaints about the 50 / 1.2L's backfocusing when at close focusing using the center AF stopped down to be a bit odd. Do so many people do that with a fast 50mm? I described the issue here:

http://forums.dpreview.com …rum=1029&message=25117450 (external link)

Of course, it would be nice if Canon offered a firmware solution for this issue so as not to adversely affect other properties of the lens. Still, how many people use a fast 50mm prime in the prescribed manner so that the issue makes itself so much of a problem that they denigrade the lens on this one minor point?

These are the types of pics I take with the lens:

and it just isn't an issue for me.

Everything but the sealing is already being sold...for $500.

(see Sigma 50/1.4)

Ironically, it also exhibits focus-shift and everybody cries about it too.
