I'm planning on upgrading to a new editing program.

Which one? I'm leaning towards Elements 7. Currently I have PhotoStudio 5.5, which came with my S1 IS, and while I can do quite a bit with it, I'd like something that is a little bit more mainstream, so to speak. Good idea, or do any of you have other suggestions?

PS Elements is a great program. Most of the power of Photoshop without the big price.

I would say Photoshop Elements as well. I also like to use Corel's Paintshop Pro X2.
If you have time you could try out Gimp. It's a totally free program that I have seen some pretty nice work done with. It's at www.gimp.org (external link)

You can also download photoshop for a few 30 day trial. It's a bit different than Elements but it does have all the features.

I've tried downloading it before, but I could not get it to download. :( So I tried out ActivePixels, another free program. It is ok, but I would find myself going back to my old software. I've also downloaded InfranView, as it is useful when I need to resize images. I also use it to convert RAW to JPEG, as my old software does not recognize RAW. Now I just shoot in JPEG anyway, just to save myself the hassle.

Gimp is free as well and offers quite a few of the functions that Photoshop has...

I have Lightroom 2.1 and Photoshop CS4. Lightroom is great for cataloging and adjusting basic picture controls. I have been playing with Photoshop lately and have been doing things like shrinking lovehandles and double chins, removing facial blemishes, removing shadows, and removing the stray arm or hand in a photo. Im not sure how elements compares but I have seen it on sale somewhere this week. I forget but its somewhere like Staples or BestBuy etc..

I should note that it seems you can't do anything extra in Lightroom that you cant do in Photoshop. Lightrooms GUI is better geared toward photographers.

Another vote for Elements. I'm back a few versions and I still have no strong desire to upgrade.

Elemnts is the logical upgrade from what you have. Ignoring the price, the full blown Photoshop may be a little overwhelming as an upgrade.

PSE 7 is a good program. I use it along with LR2. I now only use PSE 7 when I work on posters. If you shoot in Jpeg, you really don't need much more than Elements has.

I would like to shoot in RAW, but the programs I have do not recognize RAW. Photostudio 5.5 came out in at least December of 2004, because that is when I bought our PowerShot S1 IS, which I still adore as a smaller camera to carry around.

LOL, I don't like to edit out stuff either, so it has taught me to be careful about framing shots, but I want the power to do it if the shot warrants it. I don't like to edit at all beyond contrast and sharpness, and maybe a little bit of color correctness, but like I said, I would like to use a program that is a little bit more mainstream. I do not have any user manuals for the PhotoStudio, so what I have learned has been from trial and error.

Elements 7 can handle RAW but limited compared to Lightroom
