It's time for a new monitor and system. I think I'm going with a Dell i7 of some configuration but the frustration is in choosing a monitor.

I'm a photo/graphics professional and I spend my day in front of these beasts. I've always used CRTs, currently have 3 systems with them, but I guess it's time to make a move to LCD.

I'm trying to learn about S-IPS vs S-PVA, backlight bleeding, Agggghh!

I'm reading that a good model S-IPS monitor in one batch is switched to S-PVA the next, so you don't know what you are going to get. I'd like to just get the package from Dell but apparently Dell monitors are a crap-shoot all the way around.

I'm looking at maybe 22". I see that Eizo is considered the top of the line but I really don't want to spend $1000 for a 22". So what is your recommendation for a decent editing monitor? I've seen good reviews on the HP W2207h but it seems a little inexpensive.

I'm stuck! Can someone help me out of this mess? (And please don't tell me to get a Mac.)

I'm very happy with mine, nice colors and viewing angles, got a great price when live.com was at 30% but normally they are about $650 - read the end of the review, tftcentral.co.uk states "once calibrated the screen offered the best colour results we have seen in our reviews" the line that convinced me to buy this monitor.

We recently replaced all our Lacie TFTs and old Barco CRTs at work with these

http://www.quato.com/english/IP260Excellence.php (external link)

They are truly stunning and if I hadn't recently bought a pair of Lacie 324s for home, I'd be tempted.

Also I'd recommend the Lacie 324.

I have no idea about US prices on these things though.

Oh and unless Dell in the US is different to the UK, I'd think about a different manufacturer because I couldn't get them to understand that I wanted 64bit Vista and more than 3GB of RAM so I had to go elsewhere for my new i7 system.

Thanks you for the link. 24" is a little large for my space. Is there a 21-22" equivalent?

Thanks Hank, but we're up into that $1000.00+ range. I'm hoping for something less expensive.

The Quatto is excellent.
Eizo makes good screens, as does LaCie.

Have a look at shootsmarter.com (external link).

You need to register, but it's free. Good articles there.

Most 22" screens nowadays are TN AFAIK.

There also is the massive LCD thread. (external link) off course.

There is: the LP2275W, funnily enough :) It also seems very well liked. A couple of reviews:

Thanks Rene', I'm a member of Shoot Smarter, but didn't even think of it. As far as TN only, apparently there are several at least S-PVA in 21-22".

True, and the Eizo 220 / 221 is AS-IPS IIRC. My bad.
