Just in case anyone ever wondered what the difference in these two lenses might be, here's an example, taken from pretty much the same spot, both with the 5D.

14L

on the pics u can tell how much wider the FE is by looking at the boards on the left

on the 14L u can see 2
on the 15fe u can see 3.5

The two photographs weren't shot on the same day. The displays on the columns are missing as well. Replaced by the green displays near the escalators.

would you get the same result if you were using a XSI? (Anything other than a full frame)

a 14L would be 22.4L
a 15FE would be a 24FE
similar effect just not as wide

Missed it at first but now that you said it the Flag would definitely be there... Glad you pointed that out.

Notice that the kiosk in the center of the image is about the same size in both images, but the columns, doorways, and other items at the edges are smaller with the fisheye. A fisheye will project central subjects larger with respect to the field of view than will a rectilinear lens. In fact, the rectilinear lens is rectilinear because it magnifies the edges to a much greater extent than the center. That effect has more impact on their relative usefulness for me than the barrel distortion. One limitation on using ultrawides is that the central subject has to be really close to keep it from getting lost in the scene. The fisheye is more forgiving of that requirement.

Very nice! I find they both have their place in the bag. On a FF sensor or with film, the 15mm is definitely fishy. On a 1.3x body it's not so bad and still wider than the 14mm.

As for a tripod in Grand Central, that's a no-no. Handheld only. Unless you clear it first, IIRC.

Hoboy this is kind of a turn off for me, I hate curvy lines that can come from wide angle, I know fisheye creates this but when they were first invented they got used for everything and I got pretty sick of the whole idea. I've been thinking a lot about a 14mm for travel photography for like old castles, pyramids etc. but don't want the distortion. If anyone has some shots showing pretty strait forward shooting with a 14mm on a MKIII and is willing to post them I'd sure appreciate it.

I mean it's neat how much coverage you get and they are just another tool which have a place, I'm just having trouble with that. I will say that the 16-35II that I had was really quite good this way but it just might be the way you tilted down some with the 14mm that has me twisted.

Both lenses are distortions of the three-dimensional world to make it fit onto two dimensions. Each distortion can be obvious and unrealistic, or not, depending on the subject and the composition. Thus, it's not really appropriate to use one scene to compare them, because it will end up looking like a special effect in one or both cases.

For example, is this a fisheye image?

IMAGE: http://www.rickdenney.com/images/juneau-sunset-2-lores.jpg

What about this one?
IMAGE: http://www.rickdenney.com/IMG_0560_cathedral_lores.jpg

Or this one?
IMAGE: http://www.rickdenney.com/images/st-helens-coldwater-ridge-l.jpg

All of these used extreme lenses, but their subjects and compositions are appropriate to keep their extreme projection from becoming a mere special effect.

So these weren't shot on the same day?

I agree that I can see the difference of point of view, but It kind of gives the wrong idea since some items were removed from the area so it messes people up in a way.

I saw the 2 photographs and went "wtf? different perspective? i see more stairs.. yet the flag is missing, and the boards and signs on the sides arent there as well.."
