So today I realized that my G9 was a little over a year old and what a year it had seen. I have the curse of having to travel for a living, but in those travels I am able to "pay to see the elephant" as some would say. This gives me the opportunity to carry a camera and keep a record of what I've seen. I have also take more "happy snappies" than I care to edit.

Why the G9? Simple. It's a pocket camera that has DSLR control and shoots RAW (sorry Master Ken). The issue with any camera is having it there when the time is right. (thank you Master Ken) This is where the G9 is perfect. It's not too big and lets you have control over image. I own (now) a 5D Mark II and because of it's size I don't travel as often with it as the G9.

I have added the grip, thumb rest (both are musts for the G9) and a EX220 flash. Now I use the Lensmate hood for getting stable shot using two hands.

What would I change:

1. 24 mm would be nice
2. G10 exposure control wheel (I'm use to using the menu though)

Other that these two I thing it's fine.

Probably it's best feature is shooting B&W @ ISO400. It has a grainy Tri-X "feel" to it. It's the closest to Tri-X in a digital anything I've shot to date.

I hope that these types of high end of the point-n-shoots stay around. Sadly I think that the 4/3 systems will take over because of price points per features and add ons. Who knows, maybe they will be better in the long run.

Would I purchase another G9? YES. Would I purchase a G10? I'd have to test it.

To sum it up, Canon's G series will do it's job if you can do yours.

*my report is in no way meant to say the G9 is better/worse than G10. I haven't shot with the G10 and I'm sure your purchase of it will work out well for you.

Without any further rambling, here is are my favorite shots from the last 13 months (all were handheld or rested against a solid object}:

Shoot in RAW and edit in PS4 or Lightroom. Convert to Greyscale and adjust mixers to get the desired look. Or pick one of the preset high/low contrast greyscale settings if it looks good to you.
