1.) I bought XSi last week and it came with kit lense 18-55mm IS. Here is the question I want to point out, why everytime im using Auto Mode, potraight, sport, landscape and etc.. the flash will pop up after I hold down the shutter button half way, I mean even I point the camera straight up to 2 bright light but the flash still pop up and ready to flash, the only way I can stop the flash to pop up is I had to be outdoor and point the camera straight up to the sky when the cloud are gray without sunny shining. I thought the flash pop up when there are not enough light around, but wat up with this? If i zoom in at 55mm to a light bulb the flash is off that is a good thing but if i zoom out at 18mm flash will enable. Is this problem are cause by 18-55mm lense that are not letting enough light go through the lense? Of course I can use Flash off mode.

2.) I need debated from you guys. Since im on Crop Sensor camera, I'm having my eyes on 2 lenses:

1. 10-22mm
I was thinking to get this lense for landscape and maybe in 6 months i will go back to my country and take some shot, some peoples say 10-22mm and combie with XSi is like having a full frame sensor. That sound hot! But after all the lense mostly purpose are for Lanscape.

2. 17-40mm L
I was thinking to get this lense for couple reason, 1 it an L lense, 2 maybe in future I probably upgrade to 50D. They say 17-40mm is a Moderate wide zoom. Also I read somewhere that they say this lense also take good lanscape too.

With these 2 lense I dont know what to get. If you ask me what do I use it for? Well with 2 of these lense I wonder which lense is better for taking family picture, car, hobby, party, lanscape and travel?

I have a 450D with a 17-40L lens. I mainly take shots of motorbikes so I need a lens that I can get in close because they park so close together. This 17-40 gives me everything I need for these shots. Here is a shot I took today with this lens.

the flash is popping up because there isn't enough light, in order to support the shutter speed needed is my guess...

i'd go with the 10-22 as your reasons to get the L don't really seem to make much sense...your lens will work fine on a 50D if you do upgrade

also i'd look into one of the faster lenses as it appears you're in need of more light based on the flash deal...also i'd learn to use the other settings on your camera AV(aperture priority)/TV(shutter priority)...it will probably help you avoid the pop-up flash problem

I know exactly what you mean. I got so fed up with it that I started using the P mode. After I learned that I played with Av, Tv etc.. I gave up on those other modes after the first week.

If you want to learn fast you can invest in a cheap 50mm 1.8 and shoot away in AV mode. I use to shoot in the auto mode for a week till i start learning more about the camera's features and now i'm shooting in manual (still not good at it but im learning).

The 10-22mm is a good lens but don't limit it just for landscapes, like shooting in tight spaces. If you want the best standard zoom for the crop body id suggest the 17-55 2.8IS, it's not L but to me it is in the inside.
