Merry Christmas folks! What did I do today? Why, I went birding of course. The 400 5.6 was the best christmas present ever!

Anyway, onto the business! I've never seen this before - a young night heron and little egret perched on the same tree. And simultaneous grooming!

1.

2. I was so pleased when they decided to do this .

And a few more of the little egret:

5. And a bonus - one more from the same location - a kingfisher!

Very nice shots here. I have seen many pictures of egrets and herons hanging out, and in real life too, watching them fish together. They actually help each other herd fish together so they both have a better chance of catching some.

Really? Heh, you learn something every day. I almost burst out laughing when I saw them grooming simultaneously. It took a while to find a good position to get the kind of perspective that made them look like they were right next to each other (they were actually about 2-3 meters apart).

I'm always taken by surprise about how well different birds get along, especially small birds. Everything here, from Blue Jays and Cardinals to Chickadees all get along fine, here in my yard and out in the woods. I have even seen adult eagles catch fish, then share it with Juvies who can't fish as well yet, when all other times of year, the adults will normally drive off all other eagles. And it's common to see a heron and egret fishing in tandem, although they are usually too far away for me to get a decent shot. :)

I really like #3. Great background on that one.

Thanks! I'm really picky about backgrounds, and it's always nice to have someone notice the thought that went into it! I was actually thinking about how I wanted that shot to look as I was framing it, and pondering how to process the bg to get it like. The light was right, and all it needed was one run through NIK Viveza (fantastic plug-in!).

Beautiful job on all the shots, so I can't pick a favorite. I like them all.
