Well, I finally made it back to Seattle to reshoot this one. What do you all think?

My likes:
subdued colors
position of horizon

Dislikes:
maybe a little too wide
I overdid the clouds a bit...

Not the Key Tower? B of A Tower? Two Union? I appreciate a critique, but your comment just makes me think you need to experience the skyline from a different angle or two... And with South Lake Union growing the way it is, prepare to see more of this perspective.

Unless, of course, I misunderstood your comment and you mean the composition isn't one you like.

I think it speaks to belltown, and I will leave it at that from this 43yo seattle native's perspective ;)

Ah, I guess the Space Needle would be about 90 degrees camera right! I suppose that would seem more "Seattle" then ;)

The Space Needle is more or less straight ahead isn't it? My presumption is that this is near Starbucks plaza with the waterfront off to the left and the stadiums straight ahead in the distance in the right of frame. That could easily be wrong though.

Nope, it is looking South from South Lake Union. Elliott Bay is to the right, Lake Union directly behind. It's pretty close to Mercer St, so the Space Needle would be directly to the right.

Cool. A friend of mine and I are going up next week to get some night photos of the Space Needle / skyline. His brother lives in some kind of high rise, we're not sure of the view, but the non-photographers seem to think it's good. We'll see.

Great! The city is so photogenic. I lived here for about six years and just moved in August. My favorite places to get night shots of the skyline were Gasworks Park and Yesler Way, but with all of the unique buildings you really can't go wrong with any vantage point...

To be fair, this shot won't say "Seattle" to anyone who hasn't lived in Seattle. To everyone else in these United States, Seattle = Space Needle. Sorry. Tell your city to build more photogenic monuments. :) Hey, I know the feeling. I live in New York City. Photos of my city don't say "New York" to the non-NYC observer unless they include the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, or Times Square. I could take a wonderful picture of my neighborhood in Queens, but I don't expect anyone outside of my area to look at the photo and think, "New York!"

I agree that the clouds are a bit overdone. With that sort of "apocalyptic" processing, I think I'd want a more even cloud cover. The clouds on the left are much less dense than the ones on the right.

Also, there's just so much to look at, but no focal point. Is this photo about the clouds? If so, then a simpler lower composition would have served you well. Is it about the city? Then perhaps a clearer day would have been better. (Good luck with that in Seattle, I know.)

I am not my gear. I hate the word "bokeh." Photography is an art: BE AN ARTIST!

No IR. It was a very cloudy day and I shot a three shot bracket at +/- 1 EV. The clouds I darkened by adding a black layer, adjusting blend mode (I think soft light), and masking the city below. Then I added a soft light (yellow/gold) over the buildings, and eased off the saturation of the whole.

Jayspec, I feel ya!
