Hi everyone ~

I am a relative beginner to digital. Purchased a Canon G6 just recently after having the Canon A80 for about a year.

I am really enjoying the G6. Certainly the images are much better and I can do such more than with the A80.

On Saturday I purchased the abovementioned teleconverter and went out to catch some sun rises and sunsets.

This might make me sound dumb but I'm getting images enclosed in a circle and suspect this is a version of flare. Am I right or am I doing something really stupid that I don't know about? The circle appeared in the morning also when I wasn't shooting so much into direct light.

The teleconverter is a genuine Canon but doesn't come with any instructions. Does anyone have any hints to help with the use of the teleconverter?

Many thanks ~

Moongold

Hi Guys ~

I've just done some research on the net and I think what is occurring is "mechanical vignetting". When the zoom is at its maximum, the vignetting does not occur.

Does anyone else have the Canon teleconverter for the G6? If so, what is your experience with it? I've checked the Canon catalogues and I have the right equipment.

The vignetting seems to occur when if the teleconverted is zoomed at approxmately less than 60% of its full range. I looked at the "zoom" measure in the display unit to guage this. Not sure if I am using the right language but hope you understand what I mean.

I have the same adapter, and you're exactly right. I believe all tele-converters for the G-series vignette at full wide. The converter would need to be enormous in order to avoid that, so there is some compromise for size/weight.
The Canon adapter offers a pretty good compromise, imho. Check

for a comparison to some other adapters.
There is overlap in the zoom range between the non-vingetted range with the adapter mounted, and the full range of the bare camera. Luckilly, the bayonet connector allows you to quickly remove the adapter when you need to zoom back out past the acceptable range with the adapter mounted.

dbump ~

Thanks for your response. It's a relief to know what's going on so I can deal with it some way or other. I was really pleased with some of the street shots I took with the teleconverter before the vignetting problem became evident.

It's really just a matter of working around it isn't it. It's early morning here and I'm going out to catch the sun rise over the city landscape so I'll see what happens.

Thanks again :)
