Battery for G2

Hi, we are looking for a battery for our faithful G2. Most BP-511 batteries appear to fall in the $43-49 dollar range, but we found this website with a Canon BP-511 compatible battery for $12

www.sterlingtek.com (external link)

The item # is ST-51 Canon BP-511 Equivalent

It says that it has 35% more power, also states 1800 mAh.

Does anybody see a catch to such a cheap price? It says it has a 1 year warranty. My husband says at this price we can't go wrong, but I'd like to check with you folks.

BTW, I am new here and have been learning on our G2. It has been a great camera to learn on and am interested someday in an upgrade to a G6. Years ago had a manual Canon film camera but it never inspired me to try to learn photography the way this G2 does! We have taken thousands of pictures, I think the numbers have ticked over twice since we began. If this were an odometer people would be saying get a new car!

Thanks for any input on this battery,

Jessica

I use the Sterlingtek batteries in the G3 with no problems. Several people here also use them. Do a search on sterlingtek (on this forum) and you'll get a lot of info. One caveat, I have "heard" that some after-market batteries can overheat and damage your camera. I chose not to take the chance and bought the BP-511 battery charger from sterlingtek also.

Lots of people use Sterlingtek batteries in their 300D's, 10D's and 20D's. Good rep.

I listened to everyone and bought six of them... one died within a month and another is only taking a few photos before needing a recharge, so I'm not too pleased. Having said that, I always judge a company by how well they handle problems and I have not yet informed them... so I'll see how they do.

For the price, they could almost be considered disposable. But that doesn't help when you're in the field and need power. I'll probably grit my teeth and buy a couple of Canon batteries to tide me over until I talk with SterlingTek.

I have also used Maha batteries with extremely good luck but they're in the US$35 range and it sounds like you'd like something less expensive.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks for all replies. Don, are you saying that out of six batteries you bought from SterlingTek, 2 are bad? How are the other 4 performing? SterlingTek's website claims 35% more power, and 3 hours run time. Not true? I would like to know if the remaining four are as claimed, or whether all of the 6 are less than satisfactory.

I am not against paying more for a reliable battery, but if all things are equal, except price, then of course we would go with the cheaper. What I am trying to find out the chances of them being "equal" to Canon's own battery.

Thanks,

Jessica

Hi Jessica,

When I originally received the batteries, all worked as advertised. Yes, two are unacceptable now (about 2 and 3 months after purchase). As for the other 4, I reallly couldn't say since I use a selection of Maha and Canon batteries in addition to the SterlingTek. It takes an extreme case to make me sit up and take notice.

I'll repeat that I haven't contacted the company yet, so I don't know what their response will be (although they seem quite reputable)... and many other people report nothing but good things... so consider my experience the exception.

I think in the future, when I have time to order, I will stick with Maha batteries. I've been very pleased with them.

Cheers,

Don

My SterlingTeks continue to work perfectly. I now own six of them. Great battery... for me. I HAVE been using a 'different' charging technique, in that I run a battery UNTIL THE DAMNED CAMERA STOPS DEAD. THEN, I change battery and re-charge. I do NOT top off anymore!
