I think I'm the only person in the world who thinks D&B is total bunkum ...

It used to be, but it's gotten better in CS4:Click (external link).

Click the proper link, then watch the video that starts. At about 6.20.

I've tried both the transparent layer and the layer filled with 50% grey. Both worked fine. I usually use the transparent layer these days.

Dodge and burn does *nothing* on a transparent layer, sure you're not brushing, or are working on the layer underneath?

Pretty sure he meant brushing. Dodge and Burn TOOLS on a 50% grey does the same thing black and white on a transparent (or 50% grey) does.

He may have been responding to my question as to why people use a 50% grey layer to BRUSH (B & W) their dodge and burn in because you get exactly the same effect using a transparent layer... yet every tutorial I've seen using brush to dodge/burn will show it using a 50% grey layer. I'm not sure if this is something that has carried over from using the dodge and burn tools or not as no one ever gives their reasoning behind doing it.

Of course there is other ways to do this roles such as curves but D&B is intuitive as you paint in what you need.

Yeah, see, that's the bit I disagree with.

One day I'll find time to write an article on my "instead of D&B" technique.
