G6 problems

I was just wandering if anyone has a G6 and if you do, how has it been working for you? I've gone through about 5 G6s and they each had their own little problem, I'm about to take this fifth one back because it can't focus when I try to use the optical zoom, everything stays blurry, even after I've given it time to focus, especially in close shots, the object closest to me would stay blurry, but the background is clear........I'm really pissed off about this........I'm also thinking about just upgrading it to a ProShot Pro, but that's another 200 dollars more........I bought the service plan for the G6 so I can always go back to BestBuy and exchange for a new one.........i figure I've already done that like 5 times, maybe it's time to try a different model, like the PowerShot Pro?.........Any suggestions??

I would go for the DSLR - you can get the original Rebel now at a good price...

Kinda weird I suppose.

I rdon't mean this in a mean way, but it might be you? I really don't mean anything derogatory about saying that, but after 5 of the same camera, maybe you're doing something wrong or maybe your expectations are a little high.

How close are you trying to focus and in how much light? Do you have problems with normal shooting?

Geeeyejo might be on to something as well. You might be happy with the DRebel. I think for sure you'll probably have the same types of problems with the pro1 and you might have the same problems with the rebel.

You'd probably be better off making sure the problem isn't with the operator before you go laying down more dough. The G6 surely isn't perfect, but it's a great little camera for the money.

1.) What were the four other problems with the G6? Did they have something to do with focus?

2.) When you take the close up, are you in macro mode?

Obviously it's focusing on the background. Have you had a look at macro mode or super macro mode? Doesn't sound like anything is wrong with the G6, and what were the problems with the other four G6's?

... because it can't focus when I try to use the optical zoom, everything stays blurry, even after I've given it time to focus, especially in close shots, the object closest to me would stay blurry, but the background is clear........

I guess there is a lack of understanding for optics and how a camera works and what the limits for focusing are.
Think of this: In 90% of the cases the camera is not the limitation. But the operator is. ;)

You mention that you have the problem of insufficient close focussing when operating the optical zoom. The fact is that when you zoom in (that is a longer focal length towards the telephoto end of the zoom range), also the closest range between camera and object where focussing is still possibe will increase. Don't expect that when you zoom out and focus to a 5 inch range, then you could zoom in and to be able to focus again as close as 5 inches. That distance has probably increased to 10 inches. :(
I have some experience with my G2 (22'000 shots in three years) and the G6 is nothing else than a tremendously improved G2. Blaming the camera is easier than learning. But learning will give you more satisfaction.
Every camera is to some degree fool proof. Try to stay within that degree and you will enjoy digital photography. :)

No camera works on magic. There is such a thing as minimum focusing distance and I'll bet it varies with focal length on every common zoom lens.

Buying a different camera will not help you. I can't believe (figuratively speaking) that you have gone through 5 G6s. The chances of 5 cameras in a row all having genuine defects is so low it's not funny. Unless they just keep giving the bad cameras to other people.

The first problem I had with the G6 is that it got stuck in the M mode, when I switch to Tv or Av mode, it stays on M....The second G6 had something wrong with the USB port on the camera, when it is plugged into my laptop, it shows the device as unknown and also says that the camera is busy when I haven't even loaded any pictures onto my laptop yet.....The third problem is that there's a bunch of tiny little lines going across the LCD screen as I look at the picture before taking a shot.......Well, the fourth one is the one that's out of focus for closer shots.........But all that is taken care of by Best Buy..........Oh yeah, the reason I wanted to upgrade to a Pro 1 is because I had problems with the G6..........For now, I think a high-end point and shoot digital camera is good enough for me, since I'm just starting to get into photography. If I still remain interested after a while of shooting photos, I just might save up and spend some cash on a really nice DSLR, maybe the 20D, but for now......the G6 will do. Thanks for all the suggestions guy, you've all been very helpful and informative, and no offense taken on any of the comments, I was glad to accept them. Thanks again guys.
