A Nikkor found itself on my 5D, and it rocked. A mini 60 f/2.8 Micro Nikkor review.

I picked up a Nikon to EF adapter today from a local POTN member here in HK. Why? Because we have had an old AF Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 lens just sitting in the cupboard, and I have been dying to bust that little gem out onto my 5D for a long time now, and finally I get a chance to do so!

All I have to say is, the results are awesome. This lens is every bit as good on the 5D as it was on the old F50 and our old Nikon film bodies.

Build quality is very solid - but being an AF lens, it's nowhere near as sweet as other manual focus only lenses. The focus ring isn't anywhere near as smooth either, but it's nice and big, and far superior to any Canon EF non-USM focusing ring I've used to date. Size and weight are good, well balanced on the Canon, and manual aperture control rounds out a very usable lens on the 5D.

But what sets this lens apart is its optics. Nothing short of awesome. But I'll shut up and show you some samples, the first at ISO1600 and the second at ISO640, close to out of camera, with just some very quick and rough PP.

Oh by the way, there's some motion blur in that second shot ;).

I couldn't take any pics of the lens on the camera, since I don't have a second body on me right now, but what I did do is set up two mirrors, and shoot into them - so here's a pic of me shooting into the mirror, with the Nikon on the Canon. The double image is due to the mirrors, but this image is made by the lens being shot, and you can clearly see the Nikon logo . See, Canon and Nikon can get along!

Very nice indeed. But, I can see a lot of comments coming along since the ef-s 60 is also a sharp lens. Yes, I realize you are using a 5D. I'm with you on this but many will mention AF though most do not use it for macro work. Can we see some portraits and examples of bokeh. I do not have that lens yet.

I don't have any portraits yet because everyone's asleep right now, but I'll try to get some up soon, as well as some bokeh samples.

How do you like your Nikkor 105 2.5 AI btw? I have a chance to grab a mint one, with hood, for CAD$175 (about USD$143) and I'm REALLY tempted because like the 60 2.8, I've heard nothing but great things about that lens.

Edit: I love the 'yet' qualifier in your last sentence .

The Nikon 105/2.5 P.C. cannot be beat for classic portraits (given that is the focal length you could use) at a discount if you can handle MF. Should be able to get one for $100. I have a Nikon 63/2.8 on the way to me right now. Given the money, the Nikon 105/2 DC is wonderful. Best bokeh I have seen in a macro lens might just be the Sigma 150/2.8.

P.C.? I'll see if I can bargain the price down a little. You mean 60 2.8 on the way to you? I've never heard of a 63 2.8.

The 105/2 DC is an AF lens too, like the 60 2.8 right? How much does that go for? I've also heard great things about it - in fact, all of Nikon's 105mm lenses have a great rep.

The Sigma 150 2.8 looks like a marvellous lens, but I hate how big it is. Anyway, here is a rough and tumble bokeh sample for you:

There were many versions of the 105/2.5, it has been out for so long. You want the P.C. version. Yes, 63/2.8 on the way. I sold my Nikon 105/1.8 after comparing it to the 105/2 DC.

Used that one a few times when I shot Nikon. Very nice lens.

60mm MicroNikkor is one sweet lens, no doubts about it. And Canon and Nikon surely can get along:

Also used to have F50 and FM2n - nothing but good memories, I was stupid enough to sell them
