That's what she said!

OK seriously. Those of you using long(ish) and fast(ish) lenses (think 85 f/1.2L, 135 f/2L, 200 f/2L, 300 f/2.8L etc wide open or nearly so) - what's your keeper rate regarding focus accuracy and in what scenarios?

Just curious. :)

I shoot 90+% of my pix in MF so I guess my answer wouldn't count.

Hmm.. I wouldn't really consider 85mm or 135mm all that long, but my keeper rate has little to do with focus accuracy. If you question is how well do these lenses focus then I can answer that at least for the 85 and 135 they focus just fine being spot on nearly 100% of the time. However from the pics I take with them, I may keep 1 out of a 100 but it has little to do with focus.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I use both my 85/1.2 and 135L wide open when shooting indoor sports (namely gymnastics and wrestling). I'd guess at least 90% of the images are in focus.

People scoff at the 85L focus speed of course, but there are a lot of these indoor sports that don't involve atheletes running up and down a court and so servo speed doesn't matter.

And then I use these two lenses at f/4 to f/11 as well for portraits and stuff and they perform great. If I had to guess, I use them stopped down more than wide open but I do use them open too. These are f/1.6 and f/1.8 - almost wide open.

John you're reading a bit much into my question.

Nice samples Jeff. Do you use center point exclusively and then crop in post for composition?

Oh, they're all in focus.
Just not all of them have the correct part in focus.

Pretty much yes, center point. The 5D is very good in servo mode using the 6 helper points. And most sports shooting wants the athelete near the center of the frame anyway.

I do pre-focus for some stuff too.....like vault.

On a more serious note, I'm with JeffG on the centre point, ai servo thing, but I shoot mainly outdoors.
A good 90% are correctly focused, even the grab shots where i have no right to end up getting the pic.
i.e. hammered all to hell on Baileys and Budweiser on Boxing day (hey it's xmas, right?) and I get a nudge in the back along with "you might wanna get this one..." from the kids dad.

With my 200L f2 IS my keeper rate is about 86.51254632956789645216545785466998656%.
It's about 88.7856412369564987854698725426% when I am drunk, 90.23659752635641235532645674236% when I am high, and 95.56395678945213657659754687% when I am drunk and high.

I typically only use one AF point, most suited to the composition and subject location - except when tracking wildlife. That is, I don't focus and recompose. So far, my "keeper rate" (more appropriately called "focused where intended" regardless of keeper value, IMO) has been spot-on. No complaints here.

Now this I like. And like all good TLA's, shall now be refered to as the "fWI index" ;)

LOL! We'll need to take into account the actual number of shots, cross that with the FWI, divide by the KR... :p
