Does anyone know the correct voltage for a canon BP-511 battery? I want to buy a less expensive aftermarket for a back up but some are stating 7.2 volts and some 7.4. I know .2 of a volt isn't much but I want to stick with what canon recommends. TIA

Thanks, I think I'll look around for one that states it is 7.4. There are a lot of batteries out there that state they are compatible replacements for the BP-511 & BP-511A but they are 7.2 volts ???

I'm using a couple of generic BP-511 batteries I bought on eBay. They are 7.2 volts and work fine. They are 1400 mAh batteries. The orignal BP-511A battery I got with my G6 is 7.4 volts and 1390 mAh.

I spoke with a friend who is very knowledgeable on electronics and he said the minor difference in voltage would not make any difference.

Considering I only paid about $16 for a pair of batteries, including shipping, I'm really happy with them!

I'd be very surprised if 7.2 vs. 7.4 made a difference. All batteries drop in voltage as they run out of juice. That means that the camera has to be willing to run on way less voltage than the specification. My voltmeter is 8000 miles from here, so I can't measure it, but I'd guess that when the camera shuts down for "low battery", you'd measure about 4 or 5 volts. Somebody with a meter and a rundown battery want to give us a number?

Geoff
All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

Not only all that...but is the 7.4 V under load, or 'open circuit'? If under load, how MUCH load? To the best of my knowledge the only way such a 'battery' could be 'constant' voltage would be if it somehow had a Zener diode regulator in it...

Sterlingtek.com, eForcecity on eBay, Batteryspace.com are all good sources of cheap BP511's.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered one from Sterlingtek. After thinking it over it was probably a dumb question to begin with since as it was pointed out the voltage decreases as the battery is drained:oops: . I suppose a a higher voltage would be an issue but not lower.

BP511s are commonly used in so many of Canon's cameras and that design, slightly modified with extra flanges, grooves, etc. (so they won't be compatible with other camera maker's bodies), is used by many manufacturers to power their cameras. A BP511 generically is almost like a AA battery in the camera/camcorder world. So the specs. and operation is standardized. If you buy from even a semi-reputable vendor (eBay types), you'll do okay with BP511. I've purchased them as cheap as $20.00 for 2 and found that they outlast the original Canon BP511s with ease.
