Hello. I am new to Canon, having bought a used 40D this past spring. It had nothing, not even a body cap. But I had read enough online to know I was getting something very special for $175, something that had cost over ten times that much in its day.

After starting to piece the 40D together via some Ebay purchases (charger, pc cable, body cap), I now have a functioning camera but have been wondering where to start with a lens. At first I bought some adapters (since I shoot Pentax), but after the Fotodiox adapter got stuck on my best Pentax lens, I decided to just go with two different camera systems and not mix them like that.

I do want to learn the 40D with its own lens, so I ordered a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II autofocus Lens from B&H. Only because I have no idea how to navigate the Ebay waters when it comes to Canon lenses.

With my Pentax K-r, I had learned to shoot manually and use film lenses with or without adapters. I love the challenge of that but pull out the auto kit lens when I need to.

With Canon, I want to learn all that the 40D can do in auto and manual (I've heard it has the quality of a "baby" 5D) before attempting to mount old FD lenses.

I don't believe in belonging to any certain camp when it comes to brand loyalty. I appreciate any and all photography equipment and have come to love everything about quality camera bodies and lenses, no matter who makes them.

I hope that I will be welcomed here in the Canon 40D forum. It will be great to start this adventure, learning a new system but still using my Pentax (and my Sony point-and-shoots, too!)

The shots of the surfers and all the other action shots are so incredibly awesome, that words cannot suffice to show how eager I am to learn how to do all that with my Canon 40D! You guys rock!

Welcome timmijo. The 40D is a great camera as I'm sure you will find out as you use and become familiar with its functions. I've only had mine for a few months and am still learning all its "ins and outs" sort of speak. The 50mm is an excellent little lens especially for the price - - you can't go wrong with that one! Another nice, and affordable lens is the canon 55-250mm (commonly called the "nifty 250"). There is lots of help available from the members on this forum so if you have questions please ask away. Enjoy and above all have fun!

Hi timmijo.

Welcome. The 40D is a great camera. I love mine even though just recently I bought a used 5d2. It was a deal I couldn't refuse.

Here is a quick little video on some of the functions of the 40D although Im sure your familiar with most of them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKhhJxtx_20 (external link)

Get out and shoot as many photos as you can and you will soon learn that it is a good little camera. It focuses fast, much faster than my 5d2, the burst rate is very fast also.

Thanks, and please—I need all the help I can get. It's a stretch to learn an entirely different system just as you think you are beginning to have somewhat of a handle on your first system.

I'll look at that YouTube video ASAP, thanks so much for sharing. Yes, I tried a few shots with that adapter yesterday just to assess if the camera works, and it does. The only flaw I can find is a big scratch across the LCD screen on the back, but like I mentioned, it went for $175, and I could not resist buying it, not knowing about the scratch.

I will load those pics in tomorrow to see if there is anything visible on the sensor. Oh, yes, I do have a question: When reviewing your shots on the camera, how do you zoom in on them? Thanks.

~TJ

To zoom you need to press the little button on the back top right of the camera. Underneath there is a little magnifying glass with a + in it.

The one next to it is the zoom out.
