I just got my 40D over the summer and it's a great camera. Most likely, the next stop for me will be FF, so I'll be hanging on to the 40D for a while. Both the 50D and 7D look like great cameras in their own right, but there's nothing there that would compel me to upgrade anytime soon.

Just to make sure that FF is what I really want, I'm planning on renting a 5D towards the end of April when I have some time off from work and trying it out in a variety of different situations. Assuming that I definitely decide to go FF, I don't know if I can really justify keeping both a FF body and the 40D, as I'm not a professional and I usually don't find myself shooting anything that the crop body could do better than a FF body. If all else fails, I've got a G11 that I can fall back on. :)

Once I've definitely made up my mind about FF, the question will be whether to get a 5D or save for a while longer and get a 5DII. If the 5DII would come down to $2000 or less, either new or used, I'd most likely go that route.

Heather :)

I just sold off my 40D today. I haven't used it once after I got my 5D. The 40D itself was a great camera, though.

I think you should really upgrade when YOU find you need a new camera.

As for the 50D, if you'd use it, Micro Focus Adjustment is probably the main reason people will tell you to upgrade. People are crazy for it but I honestly think it is just passing quality control problems onto the consumer. Other things include the 920000 pixel LCD vs. the 40D's 230000 pixels; 6400 and 12800 ISO which are really just the same as boosting 3200 ISO by 1 or 2 stops so not really that useful unless you shoot to JPEG where the advantage is that the gain is done in camera. It has an HDMI output jack while the 40D just has composite video. In live view you can now focus slowly right there using edge detection instead of flipping the mirror down and back up; and there is a face detection mode too to find people and focus on them.

With the larger sensor, the files it produces are 50% larger so you'll get fewer on a card. Even with a faster DIGIC processor it is actually slower than the 40D in fps and the burst for Raw and Raw + JPEG is smaller than the 40D due to the larger files. There is more noise on the higher resolution 50D sensor as well.

A good thing: the 50D's sensor is flourine coated which is supposed to make it more dust resistant (both have auto cleaning).

Honestly if you use your 40D at 800-3200 ISO most of the time I think much of the higher resolution of the 50D is negated by the higher noise. By the time you run noise reduction on it, you lose a lot of the detail and the 40D requires less NR. At 100-200 ISO the 15MP sensor shows it is higher resolution and you effectively get a bit more reach with it by cropping though even there in truth the images are 50% higher in resolution but only 22% wider and 22% higher so the size difference isn't as big for cropping as you'd thing by the figure. To be about to do a 2x crop you actually need a sensor with 4x the resolution which would be 40MP, not 15MP. The 50D also starts to show diffraction effects at f/7.6 so if you regularly shoot landscapes at f/11 or higher then you really don't get higher resolution, just empty upscaling.

Ive had my 40D for about a year now after upgrading from the 30D (which I passed on to hubby) and I'm very happy with it. I could not see the point of upgrading to the 50D, the 7D looks great but the only reason I would even look at it is for the video capabilities and I really cant justify it. When canon brings out something like the 1DM111 at the same sort of price as I paid for the 40D or a camera with really stunning High ISO with lack of noise, Id move up but right now I'm just interested in L lenses and slowly gathering a collection.

I bought my first and only DSLR, a 40D, one year ago this month. I've been very happy with it and I have no intention of upgrading...ever. (If the 40D dies, or is otherwise irreparable, I may replace it with a 7D.)

I have little or no reason to shoot above 3200 ISO, so the advertised high ISO claims of the 50D or 7D hold little attraction for me, esp. given the higher noise. In all other respects, the 40D does everything I need from it. It is simply a great camera.

The 7D has many nice-to-have features but none are crucial and none are worth the bother of upgrading. I'd rather save my money for other things in life.

Someday, I might want to go full frame, but that's a ways off yet...

I find the title of this thread quite amusing. Loyalty to a camera? Plastic, metal, and glass bits?
The 40D was a quick little cam. Mine took nice crop cam pics, had great AF. The images just seemed to need more work to really pop and the raw files were not as forgiving as the 5D files. For a sub $1000 consumer cam it was a terrific bargain. Unless I was cropping like crazy I don't think I would consider the upgrade to a 7D that compelling. ..... but a 1dsmkIII... well :-)

40D Owners - Share Tips and Pics

Hi.
I stole this idea off someone else out there that started the 50D thread.

I own a 40D and have always been looking for a thread dedicated to the 40D but as yet i am unable to find one. If there is one out there then I am happy to be a part of that one and this one can just be deleted.

So here we are. Hopefully the first post of a new beginning for a not so new camera.

Paul.

There is one but the official 40D thread is kind of sadly named, "Are 40D owners loyal?" This one sounds much nicer :-)

I'll start with the first pic.

This is one of my favorites from an Outback trip with my wife last year.
