I've had my 40D for three years now and shot about 200K pictures with it, most of them racing related (in dust, rain, mud and whatnot).

Still love it, although I think it's finally time to get a new main camera and let the 40D replace my 30D as the second cam.

Have a quick 40D question. I bought my 40D from a friend of mine who also had this same issue. For some reason, the shutter button has a delay to it. I can push the button and sometimes I have to keep holding it until it finally fires. The previous owners said they were having the same issue. The wierd thing is, the battery grip button fires immediately. Has anyone else had this issue? If this is uncommon then I am going to have it serviced after wedding season. Thanks,

Chris

Mine has just started doing this recently. Pretty annoying as I have arthritis and the camera's too heavy to hold anyway. Also, after using my 430 EX II flash at an outdoor event, the onboard flash refuses to pop up and also refuses to respond to cleaning the hotshoe, prodding the little button, pressing the flash release button and lifting at the same time, and so on. I doubt that the two things are related but it looks like the camera is probably due for an overhaul.

I don't know how common the shutter problem is but it seems to come up on forums more than I'd expect.

It's an issue with the shutter button assembly. The assembly comprises of a few discs, and dirt/grime finds it's way between them and inhibits the action. I've read articles of people taking all the batteries out and pouring a small amount of alcohol down through the battery chamber to dissolve the gunk. Google it, then try it at your own risk though.

I used to spin the button around in circles and that breathed life back into it for a little while. In the end I sent it in to be repaired. Now it's like a brand new camera again.

I got the same problem after about a year and a half of shooting (around 100K pics) - took my camera to service and had the shutter button assembly replaced. It was just worn out.

When I first bought mine it had this problem. I think it may have some gunk underneath the shutter release button. After a while it started going away. Shoot some compressed air under there from the battery compartment (remove the battery first) and press and release the shutter button while you're doing it. It seemed to help mine.

What is it you like about the 40D more than the 7D?

For what I'm shooting, the 7D was over kill if I'm shooting crop. I'm not shooting BIF, sports, etc. where the AF system of the 7D shines. The 40D provides me with a great back up body for the price.

It takes great shots up to and including ISO800.

I use it when I experiment with studio lighting scenarios to keep my shutter count down on my 5DII.

Makes sense. It really is a great body. I'm going to eventually get a 7D for the better sealing and AF systems, but that is only because I shoot wildlife where that would be beneficial. I believe that the 40D is plenty of camera for a lot of folks out there.

Oh no... no, no, NO. My 40D died :( Just shut itself off in the middle of shooting. If I re-insert the battery it works for a few clicks and then it bonks again.

I really didn't need this...

edit: decided to try some things before taking the cam in for repairs - and it turns out the grip was having problems, not the 40D! Cleaned all the contacts, batteries etc. It's alive! Yay!

*faints from relief*

I know what that's like, and I'm glad you found the problem.

I thought my 40D had died the other day. Press the shutter, single mirror click, black LCD. Eeeek! Some of you might recognise the symptoms. I'd been playing with mirror lock-up a little earlier...
