I shoot with a 1.4x and a 70-200 but on a crop body and can get pretty close. Not sure on a FF, but a 2x would do pretty good I think.

I've never shot surfers before...think if I got a 2x TC with my 70-200 it would get me close enough without going in the water?

Yeah should be fine! Of course, the more you can fill the frame the better, but with that setup even a highly cropped photo will still look fine, especially if it is for web sharing :-)

Of course, different beaches will stretch your lens reach more than others. Shooting longboarders at T-street is a lot different than 56th street at high tide.

If you are shooting a beach break at high tide or shooting off a jetty or pier, you won't always even need your full zoom length.

The guy's doing the crazy airs and stuff are usually in relatively close - so that's a bonus.

Actually I haven't been around the forum hardly at all for awhile until the last couple weeks. Been going through alot of BS and kinda slackin in the Photography. Lost the desire to shoot for awhile...but all is good and I'm shooting away again now! I'll have to go check out the 2am thread now! Kinda forgot about it!

Oh ok. Yeah, maybe I'll rent a TC if I have time to go this weekend. Doing some remodeling at the house and was thinking of going to Octoberfest Sunday and bringing the camera.

You can get away with shooting the beach break and heavily cropping a SHARP shot from a 200mm lens - for web sharing anyway - I was doing that last weekend cause I didn't have a TC either and it worked no problem.

Hmmm...maybe I'll give it a shot. Would be fun either way I'm sure.
