Does anyone have recommendations for an external harddrive?

i like the western digital passports. not really a recommendation since i dont own other brands. ive used seagates and they seem fine.

id get the 2.5 size so that i dont have to depend on external power cords. just plug and play. small and portable.

You mean like a portable one ?

I bought a nice one from Seagate about a year or so ago, don't remember the details. It works really well - transfer speed is really good, it's small (like a pack of cards or a bit larger) and capacity is huge - I think it's 1 TB. Got it at Best Buy.

I'm mainly here for the snacks

Another WD user. I've never had one fail yet.

Seagate and WD seem the front runners. I'm buying an iMac soon so I'm planning to get an external as well.

I've always liked wd, some hates it, some likes it. for me personally i like it. i have to admit i've came across a few fails that I had to RMA, which was a very easy process from western digital. recently there was a failed one on a friend's compaq desktop whichi couldnt rma since it was a 3rd party from compaq and the warranty was over from compaq. compaq/hp service is very horrible :\

anyhow, back to wd. what i like about them is they perform well. lots of computer builders would suggest seagate for performances but I think wd is better and the operation on the wd hd's are more quiet then seagates.

i usually get mine from costco. they always seem to have the better price when i shop for one. i think costco favors the seagate now, meaning better sale price for the size.

i like the WD drives but stay away from the mybooks. They tend to have poor power supplies. For the best bet, get something bus powered so if you have to take it on the go you dont have to worry about extra cables. I use a FW800 1TB Passport that has lasted quite a while and for at home I have several Seagate drives that have interchangable interfaces. Currently on FW800 but moving to thunderbolt on at least 2 of them coming soon.

A power supply is very inconvenient. I currently have a TB harddrive (forgot the brand) for Time Machine to backup my laptop and I hate having to move it around so I just leave it on my desk.

I was also just talking with my sister (she's an interior architect/designer -- heavy use of autocad and photoshop) and she recommended WD Passports.

She said that's the primary HD she uses for work and USB 3.0 is sufficient for her work, so I feel a 20-30mb raw file will be fine with USB 3.0.

YES!!

Run a regular HDD. I have externals if you want to buy them haha They are USB. I have a power cable and sata cable that are in back of my case that the HDD can hook up to.
