Continuing my filter research. I see many different sizes available in terms of holders and their appropriate filters: 100x150, 6x4, 150x170...What's that all mean? Or more accurately, why would one want any given size over another?

The larger the the holder the wider lens it can be used on and/or more filters can be stacked. Some have the size listed in mm others in inch (100x150 is the same as 4x6). The larger dimension lets you slide the filter farther, as I mentioned earlier if you get a 100x150 GND you can slide it down far enough that it will act like a ND(it may still have a slight bit of graduation but very little) but a 100x125 GND can't be slid as far so you'd have a lot more graduation left in the frame when slide as far as you can go, or when using a reverse/hard edge GND the longer filter will let put the edge anyplace in the frame while a shorter one would keep you closer to the rule of thirds.

Nov 14, 2013 13:40 | #6815 puckman, I'm cheap with filters, so I only use screw on types. I only have 3 and 10 stop nd's. I use software to merge if needed. If you want to use GNDs screw on filters will limit you on composition. Also screw on filters are more limiting on stacking, you'd need to use 120mm threaded filters in order to stack on wide angle lenses and those cost even more than the square filters. Again, good points. Thanks. I think I'll just end up going for the Lee system once I've gotten the 6D and figured out which filters I need exactly. Sony A7RII and a bunch of lenses.
