Very nice capture, Butch! I really gotta get me some BIF shots.

So you go straight through CS, no Lightroom? How do you keep the photos organized? Manually in folders?

With all that said, today is new camera day for me. The 6D should be landing sometime this morning (as soon as UPS gets here). I'm so excited it's like Christmas morning. FF goodness to come.
Of course, the weather isn't exactly ideal for taking out a brand new camera. I'm hoping things clear up by this weekend.

Although I have LR4 on my computer, I honestly don't use it at all... I'm strictly using CS6 for everything; processing, hdr's, photomerging, etc... With regards to organization, I'm old school and use folders I created in my hard drive...

I have folders for specific categories; sports, landscapes, weddings, birthdays, etc... Within each category there are subcategories... With the 'landscape' folder, I would have subfolders for "LA Arboretum", "Huntington Beach Pier", "Huntington Library", "Griffith Observatory", etc... Under those subcategories I would have folders with dates on them... That way I know when I went to those locations... For example, the "LA Arboretum", I have folders with three different dates I went this year, including our visit there... Finally, I have my last set of folders; RAW and JPEG... That's where the image files reside...

I know it sounds completely OCD, but it keeps everything nice, neat, and organized!!! I know where everything is without bumbling through hundreds of directories... Anyhoo... That's how I organize my image vault and library...

:D

PS. For backups, I usually append and archive every 8-10 months on two external 2TB hard drives... One kept at home and the other at work, for safety reasons... Food for thought... Hehehehe... Congrats on the 6D, too!!!

:) :)

Believe me, no one is more OCD than me when it comes to that stuff, which is precisely why I'm asking about this stuff. I've been horribly frustrated trying to find a system that works well for all situations.

I kinda like your system. I'm guessing you import all the original raw files into the appropriate "raw" subfolder and leave them their unedited (these would be strictly the originals) and then export all your edits to the parallel jpg subfolder?
What about your TIFFs (roundtripping through CS6, I would imagine you have to go from raw to TIFF for a pano stitch for example)?

The one thing in your system that makes me have doubts about its validity for me is that your top level is not dates, but rather categories like "landscapes" and "weddings" and so on.
Sometimes, a given shoot of mine will be all over the place (more often than not). I'll have landscape sunsets at the beach, accompanied on the same card with random shots of food I took when we stopped for dinner on the way home from the beach, and maybe a few portraits, etc.
Would you separate out the import from a given card? Meaning, you get home with 200 shots on a card, you download them to the computer and move some into landscapes/beach/2013-11-21 and some others into portraits/beach/2013-11-21 and a few into food/santa ana/2013-11-21?
(Sorry for the crap examples, but you get the idea).
I'm just wondering how the OCD in you deals with separating out shots from the same trip that way (and isn't it a lot of work to do right on import?).

^ For your first question, I would download all the RAW's to their appropriate folders... Then go through each image and delete those that I see fit let go... For the keepers, I go through them again and add the 'stars rating'... The ones that have 'star ratings' will be process and exported as JPEGs for web viewing... No TIFF's are ever created, even with large panos or brenizer methods... My computer can easily handle the workload for things like that...

Question #2 is simple... I do separate the images to their respective folders... So if I shot at "Griffith Observatory" in the morning, shot a birthday party at noon, and captured sunset landscapes at "Hilltop Park", I would download them in a folder called "NEED TO SORT", then systematically make sure each image I took goes to their respective directories and dates... On a long day like that, I'd just download the card and organize it the follow day...

I'm sure everyone has their own process and procedures of doing things... We all are OCD, to some extent, with our images... Hehehe... Good luck in finding your workflow, Dean!!!

:D

Thanks bro...There are so many options. And until I settle on a system that works for me, it's been a mess on my computer, haha.

I think maybe with the new 6D, I can start with a clean slate. Forget about the old disorganized photos and start with a clean new "library".

Anyways...Anything good coming up this weekend? I'm definitely gonna wanna get out there and shoot with the new toy!

This is great info Butch, I need to redo how I categorize photos and this looks to be a great system.

A new 6D, oh man Christmas before Christmas am I jealous. I won't see any new camera gear until I get my daughter through college, what a joke tuition has become.

Not having kids definitely helps with the gear acquisition syndrome...

It certainly has been a Christmas kind of couple of weeks here. New camera, new lens a few weeks back and I also got me a nice camera backpack earlier this week.
I think I'm done "shopping" for the time being though (well, I still need an ND filter, but that can wait). Time to actually get out there and put all this stuff to use.

It's ridiculous how much tuition has gone up. What my scholarship and a small loan covered my freshman year, I slowly had to increase a loan up to now.

Grad school isn't going to be any better...

Not at all. It's a common question to ask a college student. Hah

I'm an economics major, Poli Sci minor. Planning to apply for Law School for Fall 2015.

Just going to work and study for the LSAT after graduation in May.

Probably not. Looking to move up north, whether NorCal or Pacific Northwest.
