I really want to go to a place like Canyonlands in Utah but that's a bit (haha) too far for a day trip. Any good suggestions within a few hours of greater LA area? 60D | Canon 15-85mm IS

It's Limestone Canyon in Irvine, so it's quite close. Everyone compares it to the mini-grand canyon right in LA. It's about a 4-5ish mile hike to hit red rock canyon type views. Not as dramatic as Grand cayon but still awesome nonetheless. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jose72388/

Just north of Mojave is the Red Rock area with good shots just after dawn. A little farther up 395 at Lone Pine are some nice rock formations in the Alabama Hills, but that would be an over-nighter. Looks like a movie setup and telling a story at the same time. Shot at Salton Sea? Robert
