No, I haven't had any focus issues. It has even proved to me that it is quite capable of AI Servo in low light situations and perform quite well. Are you asking this because you want to know before you get a 5D Mark II or are you asking this because you're having problems with one?

Hi,
thanks for the quick reply.

I got mine on the way from HK as we speak.
A good friend of mine is facing a HUGE focus problem. (he is not an amature)
Out of 500 pictures taken yesterday about 200 were out of focus.
(tested with several lenses).

Sarel.

Try a 1 series :) It's hard to go back to 9 focusing points with only the center being a cross type. That's probably the main thing holding me back.

Nope...none yet.

He does realize DoF is shallower on a FF vs a crop?

Also, has he tried microadjustment for the lenses he was using?

The focus works great. Actually, even the outer focus points seem to work a bit stronger than the original 5D. The outers are still not champs of low light, but the center is dead on.

They used a system for focus that has proven reliability, stability, and accuracy. If the images are truly out of focus, and it can be repeated in a controlled situation, then something may be off with that camera. In large productions, there is always a few off units. Just the way it works. Canon should have no problem fixing or replacing it.

I'd do some focus test shots, to verify its the camera and not the conditions or user error. If its off, and the same lenses performed well on another body, I'd recommend NOT messing with micro-focus. Send it back for an exchange, if possible. If its too late for that, send it to Canon for adjustment.

Thank you so much guys.

Just spoke to my friend and showed him your replies.
He asked me the following:

He is using everything but the Centre point (combined with very fast lens + wide open appertures such as the 135 F/2 , the 85 1.2 and the 35 a.4)

while using the Centre point, no problems at all.

please share your thoughts with me.

Thanks, Sarel.

I do the same, and I do not have any issues with OOF photos. I shoot fast lenses using the off center points very often.

The center points search for either vertical, or horizontal lines. Regions of no contrast will throw them off. The centers work much better if there is a visible "line" of some sort that is oriented perpendicular to their designation. They are actually pretty good, as long as used to detect as intended. I feel most people don't realize how to use them though.

Can should have made them all crosses, but oh well.
