O.K. T'was the day before the expiration of the Canadian Canon rebate, and thoughts of a 40D danced through my head.
The price is attractive $839 but I have to pull the trigger before the stores close tomorrow.
Need to be convinced that now is the time to buy.
Will the price drop in the New Year?
My XT is working fine and I'm very happy with the results but have this urge to upgrade. Will be going to Britian next summer so money will be a little tight.
Need you guys/girls to convince me one way or the other.
Go ahead give it your best shot.

Wayne

Hi Wayne,

If what my Henry's dealer has told me is correct, prices will rise in the new year, not fall. So, it would seem now would be a good time to purchase!

On the other hand, you say your XT is working fine and are very happy with the results. Given this, my guess is that it's not limiting you in any way, you just want to upgrade. Understandable, I always just want to upgrade :) There may, however, be a better place for you to put your money. I see that you're currently using the kit lens (18-55). I'm guessing that's the lens you use most often (correct me if I'm wrong). Have you considered replacing that with something a bit higher end? Do you find yourself using your flash a lot? If so, perhaps you could purchase a 430EX and start taking advantage of what it has to offer (e.g. bounce flash).

There are a lot of things that can be upgraded other than the body! :)

Do it!! I went from xt to 40D. Was going to keep the xt for backup. Once I used the 40D, the xt never got touched. Took both on vacation. One for long lens and one for short. After the first day, just used the 40d and changed lenses. Size and view finder plus a few other things are worth it.

Prices of things will always keep dropping as they get older. Next summer the 40D will be cheaper than you can get it now so there is no rush really.

But also remember that better lenses will make more difference to image quality than a new body.

Who knows where prices will go. Last May I didn't know that I would loose 1/2 of my 401K by October.vmad
I got my 40D and love it. If I could have afforded a 50D I would have got that instead. The prices are great. Jump right in.
I remember quite a few years ago before I had a PC at home I kept putting off the purchase because the prices just kept dropping every 6 months or so.

Finally I realized that I would never have a PC if I kept waiting for the bottom (back then home PC's were around $2000).

Get it now! I got my 40D for around 1,000US$ and I have no regrets. It really is worlds apart from the rebel series. The handling alone is reason enough for me.

Well I want to thank everyone for the advice it has been a great help.
Nukey,
Good advice I have been lax in updating my Gear List and have the 430 Flash and the Sigma 17-70. I have been looking at other glass but can't make up my mind as to which way to go. I love the 70-200 but it is does not really fit my style of shooting. I am happy with the Sigma so have decided to get the 40D before the prices go up. (With my luck the opposite will happen).
I have been considering the 40D for months now and I guess now is as good a time as any to make the leap. I think, as D.C. says the viewfinder and the LCD really make it attractive.
Will be picking it up this afternoon and hopefully will be posting something this weekend. That depends on the weather, they are predicting -23 tonight and for the next couple of days. I guess I will see how it works in the cold.
Again thanks for the advice it was a great help.

HAppy New Year to All!

Wayne

Your street cred will skyrocket and girls will think you are a hottie photog...not some goofy tourist with a silver camera.

Plus, chances are you only live once.

Honestly, its not really about needs, its about wants (we only really NEED food, water, air, and shelter...everything else is a want).

Defintely a First-World only dilemma.

EDIT : Also, Live-view is handy for shots when looking through the viewfinder is hard/impossible (i.e. low angle shots and over-the-head shots).

Tis true, chicks dig a guy with a big camera... err a big lens... well they just dig a guy that is manly enough to carry around a camera and shoot random things. Makes us look artistic. Now if only I could actually find the chicks around here...

bluefox9er: You're probably right I don't need it, just the same as I didn't need the steak diner I had last night, but it satisfied a need.

nw85887: My wife may not look at it in the same light but maybe they will.

Make sure you dress all in black and wear "guyliner"...then you're an "arteest".

And make sure you're random photos are slightly out of focus....it shows how deep and brooding your tortured soul is...then they all thnk, "Maybe I can save him!"

Most women can't differentiate between an XT and a 40D (or in my case, a gripped 30D and a 5dM2).

And as long as you always say "No, I'm married", it will prove :
1) you can be trusted to stay true when faced with overwhelming temptation(s)
2) you are still highly desirable & virile male and she needs to recognize that

you can get a flawless used 30D for $450 - sell the XT for $250 - costs you $200 for the upgrade.

Lies, all lies! "Guyliner", "Arteest"? That's a stretch. He's right, most people can't tell the difference between gear because, they aren't photographers.

There a quite a few advantages moving from an XT to a 40D. Live view is helpful in some situations. The LCD is an improvement. The crosstype focusing points are great. Focus is faster and the ISO expansion isn't bad. 6.5fps is great for sports.

Plus, you get the BIG WHEEL!

However, the 50D from what I've heard is quite better step in the right direction. It is more expensive though.

If prices do go up. Perhaps it's a good time to upgrade. But, no one needs anything. Food, shelter, and a home are needs.

I had this issue with the 5dmkii last week. This is a first world issue.

The tips on the married part, not so sure about but, they sound like decent advice.

You made the right choice, the 5DmkII is overrated.
