The Tamron 17-50 is a great lens. The constant 2.8 is handy...my only knocks against it were lack of IS and the lack of USM.

Is the AF that much slower than USM?

Camera: Canon 30D Gripped
Flash: Canon 420EX

Lenses: Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 | Canon 50 f/1.8 II | Canon 70-200 f/4L

For general walk around use are you finding the 17-55 sufficient in reach?

Check it out yourself. Spend a day shooting with your 28-135 but limit it to 55mm. See if you can live with that. When I use my 24-105L, most shots are taken at 55mm or less but now and again I use its full length. I can't ever see me buying anything longer than that though.

I'm a big fan of the 24-70, it's on my camera more often than not. Heavy, yes, but the IQ is fantastic. Whether it is wide enough for you on a 1.6x crop body is something you need to weigh up though.

I was thinking this could be good, but read a lot of coments on here about the quality issues...
