I think your description of DPP issue is in error Jeff.
You can easily switch from picture to picture in full screen mode with an arrow either way....
Maybe you need to upgrade your version of DPP if it is old.
hm

(Sorry, just noticed your last response) - anyway, you certainly have lots of options now!!

Alternate method in DPP (faster). Select all, open Tools/Quick Check, click Full Screen, scroll through photos with the right and left keyboard arrows, with right mouse click zoom in and rank. Zoom amount, 50% or 100% is set in Preferences. Afterwards, select all the photos with the rank you want to edit, open them in Edit Image window (Button at left end of tool bar.)

Thanks, Elie. That is a good method. I don't use DPP much, but the more I do, the more I see to like. I've also noticed that the same images opened in my regular converter, C1, that show blown highlights, are not blown out in DPP. And I've yet to see any app that opens a folder of raw files as fast as DPP.

Color? It's all relative...

Use the canon software to get them onto my hard drive

Either open all up in CS2 and steadily work through
or
Use FS viewer which is freeware and will allow you to view Canon raw files, you can also set up a shortcut (The E key) to open them in Photoshop individually

I was intrigued by your question since I am also just starting to use a 50D and shoot RAW. After looking at this thread I started fooling around with ZoomBrowser again and I think I found a way to do what you wish.

After selecting one of your RAW thumbnails while in the Zoom Mode window go up to the toolbar and select "View Image". In the next window you can zoom in to your heart's content, even to "Actual Size with the buttons provided and then you can use the Next and Previous arrow keys on the upper left of the toolbar to go to the other images in the folder.

Hope this is what you were thinking of.:)

I just open mine in lightroom. My import profile adds basic IPTC data as I import, I add location data by selecting all images taken at the same location and keyword groups as required. I use the pick and reject keys for the first cull and select the ones I want to work on using coloured labels.

I do this the same, except, I don't use the mouse, right hand on arrows, left hand on 1,2,3, keys, and arrow rank, arrow rank, rinse, lather repeat.

I have found nothing faster to load a full screen RAW than DPP.

When ranking I rate a keeper as 1, a maybe as 2 and trash as 3, when at the end of the list, close quick view, go to edit and choose select 3 ratings, they are all selected, hit delete.

Go back and hit select 1, click the edit window and crop, tweak, etc. Once you are done with that go through the 2s, you'll be surprised how much is trash, if there is a one, I'll update it to a one and tweak as well. I used to keep all I shot, the downfall of cheap storage, but now, at scores of thousands of images, I only keep those that really matter.

Found the link to the canon Codec. Install it as well. It will make windows handle them like jpegs.

Use IrfanView if you need to look up a RAW file - it's free, lightning fast and has some nice basic tools. I have all my CR2 files associated with it by default, for quick viewing.

ZoomBrowser is really good for reviewing / cataloging many files. It's not nearly as powerful as LR but it's free and has enough capabilities.

DPP is more geared towards RAW edits. I don't believe it has keywords support.

Thanks, faststone does a great job for viewing RAW (from G9) and other formats I use.
