I saw somewhere a fella that cut the off shoe cord with a few inches left of bothe the flash mount and the camera mount end, replace them with female CAT-5 ends. Now you can make an extension as long as you like (almost, I'm sure there is a limit with voltage drop and such). And if you want to keep the short coil for a flash bracket all you have to do is attach male CAT-5 ends to it.
