Long ago there was a link (http://www.shaystephens.com/moon_calc.php (external link)) to a moon exposure calculator in a thread on this forum. Unfortunately it no longer exists but a web search indicates a new and improved version exists at http://www.adidap.com …2/06/moo...re-calculator/ (external link)

I had that link bookmarked for a while now and then tonight decided to use their moon calculator again. Now Firefox is warning Reported Attack Page!. Additionally, Google is listing it in a query as unsafe to visit while also advising of a Malware Warning.

However there are other lunar exposure calculators. I found this one;

Yeah, let's just ignore all the learning tools available online and post facetious comments at will anytime someone asks for help. :rolleyes:

There's a difference between a learning tool and having a tool to all the work for you.

I'm not saying I'm right, in fact, I started my post with "am I the only one" who thinks this way...who knows, I may be?

But the moon is easy to shoot and re-shoot...I'm just a fan of going out and trying different things and seeing what the outcome is like. Plugging all the variables into the computer, then putting them in my camera, aiming it at the moon and getting the shot (even if it's perfect), to me, takes away from the enjoyment of photography, which is trying new things and seeing what happens, even if what happens is less than perfect.

Again, I may be alone in this...but as far as "tools" go, it seems to me that this one goes too far and instead of AIDING a photographer in achieving a good picture, it simply does it for the photographer...

And if it doesn't...then it's absolutely pointless :D

I thought that a working calculator, which was not malware was being asked for, I could be wrong though, and you are free to ignore this website.

You're showing your age. Knowing that the moon is a neutral gray and is illuminated by bright sunlight means nothing anymore.

I never got why people felt the need to get personal over a difference in opinion on a message board. What's next? You're going to make a fat mom joke?

By the way, how old am I?

My apologies. It wasn't intended as offensive in the slightest. Such is the danger of an internet post.
The inference was intended to be that once upon a time you would have considered what the subject was and how it was lit to get the exposure in the ballpark and followed that with some experimenting or bracketing to nail it down. That approach seems to have been lost, despite the fact that the camera has an LCD so you can see the result instantly, complete with blinkies and/or a histogram.

Steve.

None taken :)

I absolutely understand your point in the last post and agree with it...that's why I ask everyone who took a picture I like on here to share their EXIF...(especially for startrails, since they're usually a one shot per night deal for those of us still doing it in one frame). So yeah, it's nice to have some direction...but on something as easy to shoot as the moon with digital cameras (like you said, we can chimp and find out instantly whether we over or under-exposed)...it seems like getting the settings off a website, going outside, shooting it and coming back out would take the fun out of photography. Again...my opinion, which may not be shared by everyone (or anyone haha)...but that's the first impression I got.

It would be much more useful to have a compilation of EXIF for things like startrails...in fact I'm sort of working on one for myself, that if there's interest I'd share :)
